这幅祭坛画原来安放在比萨的圣方济教堂里.而早在 1272 年以前.契马布耶就与比萨的雕塑艺术结下了不解之缘.这幅画便是重要的物证。契马布耶在比萨亲眼目睹尼可拉．毕萨诺的雕刻之后.便启发了他构思人物形象和斗蓬形态的新方式.正如这幅圣母画像一样.包裹圣母的斗蓬已不再是金光闪闪.而是满布着透明的褶纹。因此.有幸目睹毕萨诺的雕刻.对契马布那来说是十分重要的机缘.毕萨诺那种经常流露出的古罗马艺术特色的古典主义.导致契马布耶将拜占庭文化显示出古典派的痕迹。契马布耶凭着直觉绘出了宝座的「透视图象」.他从侧面描绘宝座.却从正面画出宝座的台阶；位于宝座两侧的天使.则同样令人产生了纵深感。他将宝座的靠背画得过分高大.圣母头部的光环.遮住了宝座的尖顶.加重了圣母脸部在画中的份量；圣母的躯体包拢在斗蓬的褶纹里﹝这些褶纹显然反应了尼可拉．毕萨诺雕刻的立体感效果﹞.几乎占满了宝座的整个空间；天使的神态僵硬.不论是细部﹝如：手画得十分具体.形状各有特色﹞或先后排列的方式.都展示了浓厚的拜占庭风格.也有助于产生画面的纵深感。
