本幅无年款,从画像上分析任熊应正值三十余岁的壮年。此时正是社会大动荡时期,面对清王朝的日益腐败、太平天国运动的兴衰以及列强的入侵,画家在自画像中面露沉思状。其袒露右肩、不修边幅的装束,俨然一位绿林好汉之相貌,无一点正襟危坐或优游林下的文人画像格调。此图如银勾铁画般的衣纹线条不仅与主人公坚毅勇猛的形象相吻合,而且烘托出其内在的阳刚之气,增强了画作的感染力。

In this picture, there is no age. From the analysis of the portrait, Ren Xiong is in his thirties. At this time, in the period of great social turbulence, facing the increasing corruption of the Qing Dynasty, the rise and fall of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement and the invasion of foreign powers, the painter appeared meditative in his self-portrait. His uncorrected right shoulder dress resembles the appearance of a good man in the green forest, without any literati portrait style of sitting in a straightforward position or traveling in the woods.
