Belfast -born John pulls Wiley to attend the Academy in Glasgow in 1870s and Acad Mie in early 1880s in, Paris. He returned to Glasgow and was associated with the Glasgow School of art. In 1888, he was appointed to draw a state visit to Glasgow to Queen Victoria international exhibition. It began his career as a social painter and soon after he moved to london. In London, he became friendly to James Mcneilwhistlers and he obviously influenced.
Like William Orpen, Ravi was appointed official painter of the first world war. Ill health, however, prevented him from traveling to the west. A serious accident in the Zeppelin raid also made him unable to perform this duty as a war artist. He stayed in England, most of the boats, planes and airships painted. During the war, he was a close friend of the Asquith family, and they spend in their time on the river Thames Courtney Sutton residence, they painted portraits and idyllic scenes like in Jiangxia (Hugh in gallery).
After the war, he was named Sir in 1921, he was elected to the Royal academy.
During this period, he and his wife, hazel, is tangent to participate in the Irish war of independence and the Irish civil war. They gave the negotiations led to the use of their home in London to Ireland to negotiate the Anglo Irish treaty.
