He was born in a village between Bologna and Ferrara. He got the nickname Guercino "squint" (Italian) in his early years because he was a cockfighting eye. He was mainly self-taught. At the age of 16, he worked as an apprentice in the shop, Benedetto gennari's painter Bologna's school. By 1615, he moved to Bologna and his work was praised by ludovici Carracci. Guercino painted two large canvases, Elijah's crows and Samson by the Philistines, because cardinal Serra Ferrara, the Pope's envoy. These paintings have a distinctive naturalist caravagesque style, although it is unlikely that Guercino saw any Roman Caravaggio first-hand.
