John Haseltine was born in Philadelphia, a successful businessman, and Elizabeth Shinn Haseltine, an amateur landscape painter, Haseltine worked in the University of Pennsylvania and then at Harvard University where he earned a degree in 1854.
He first exhibited his paintings of the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania, he sailed to Europe, the first time to participate in the colonial American painter who is in Dusseldorf, and then travel to Rhine in Switzerland and Italy.
