His younger brother, Edward Hill, also became a successful landscape painter. At the age of 15, he and his family emigrated to the United States; they settled in massachusetts. 1851, he married Charlotte Elizabeth Hawkes; they had nine children.
At the age of 24, Hill in the evening of the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts (PAFA) under the tutelage of American painter Peter Rothermel Frederic (1812 - 1895). While he is a student, a member of the Hill to the White Mountains in New Hampshire in early 1854 and next to the Hudson River school, such as Benjamin Champney. 1856, Hill and his family moved to San Francisco, California.
With the painter Virgil Williams and photographer Watkins, Hill completed his first Yosemite Valley 1865. A year later, Hill went to the east coast and europe. He built his family on the east coast and continued to sketch the west coast and attend the San Francisco art society. He moved his family back to San Francisco 1873.

After suffering a stroke, Hill left to Yosemite, along the coast of California, including stops in Colorado, Santiago and Santa Barbara. Hill is the most famous and enduring work is the "Last Spike" in the drive Cape summit, UT, May 10, 1869, joined CPRR and Union Pacific Railroad tracks. 8 x 12 feet of the giant painting, there are 71 people and with a portrait of the first transcontinental railway train its characteristics, hanging into Sacramento in the California Railway Museum, California.
