 William Trostrichards was born in June 1833 in Pennsylvania, 3, Philadelphia. In 1846 and in 1847, he attended the local central high school. Between 1850 and 1855, he studied part-time with the German artist Paul Webb, while working as a designer and metalwork to decorate the illustrator.
