陈澄波画作

台灣著名畫家。1926年以一幅〈嘉義街外〉的作品，入選第七回日本「帝國美術展覽會」(簡稱「帝展」)，這是台灣人首次以西畫跨進日本官展的門檻；其後又數度入選「帝展」和其他各項展覽。1947年二二八事件爆發後，因代表嘉義市「二二八事件處理委員會」前往嘉義機場協商，於3月25日上午被中國國民黨軍隊槍斃後，懸屍示眾三天，享年52歲。

陳澄波出身嘉義，母親早故，父親陳守愚為中国清朝之秀才，受聘在外為私塾老師。陳澄波從小由祖母帶大，由於家境清寒，先進私塾讀漢文，13歲才進公學校讀書，後來又到臺北市的臺灣總督府國語學校（即今國立臺北教育大學[1]就讀。由陳澄波留下的日記中，可以看到他自幼就有「立大志、做大事」的企圖。在台灣的日治時期，畫家有了有史以來最高的地位與榮寵，在當時入選帝展總是報紙上的頭條新聞，繪畫成了台灣人揚眉吐氣的最佳方式。於是陳澄波的理想便是成為一名大畫家。

在陳澄波上台北入國語學校的第一年，著名的水彩畫家石川欽一郎仍在該校兼課任教，故陳曾在石川的指導下，受過基本的寫生訓練與水彩技法。陳在畢業以後返鄉任教，也曾帶領學生到郊外去寫生。

1924年，陳以將近三十歲的高齡考入當時畫家的聖殿---東京美術學校---的圖畫師範科就讀，是早期留學日本的台灣學生之一。1926年，他以畫作〈嘉義街外〉首次入選日本第七回「帝國美術展覽會」，成為台灣以油畫入選該展覽的第一人。繪畫燃燒著他的高昂的生命，他說，「一個以藝術創作為己任的人，若不能為藝術而生、為藝術而死，還能夠算是個藝術家嗎？」。他一生最崇拜的藝術家，正是梵谷，家中兩本關於梵谷的傳記和書信集，被他用紅筆畫了又畫。


陳澄波在美術上的成就
陳澄波除了以〈嘉義街外〉這幅畫入選日本第七回帝展以外，其後也多次入選槐樹社展、春陽展、光風展、台展、台陽展、府展等展覽，並先後組織七星畫壇、赤島社、台陽美術協會等重要美術團體，其於繪畫的成就，以及推展台灣藝術文化的努力，功不可沒。

陳澄波經過嚴格的正統學院訓練，嚴謹的構圖，卻又不失純稚樸拙；特有的筆觸，大膽的用色，令人不禁熱血沸騰。在他的作品中，人物與靜物較少，但其風景繪畫的風格，充滿了強烈執著的「素人」個性，實有其獨特的韻味。


在二二八事件中不幸罹難
1947年二二八事件爆發後，嘉義地區發生嚴重衝突，國民黨的軍隊被民兵圍困在水上機場內。嘉義市的「二二八事件處理委員會」接受其和談要求，而於最後一次推派代表時，派潘木枝、盧炳欽、柯麟、陳澄波、邱鴛鴦（以上皆嘉義市參議員）、劉傳能等六人擔任「和平使」前往協商。不料，只有邱鴛鴦、劉傳能兩人順利回來，其餘全遭對方拘捕，並用粗鐵線捆綁起來。3月25日上午，這些人被國民黨軍隊捆綁起來，從嘉義市警察局沿著中山路遊街至火車站前，然後被槍斃後懸屍示眾。陳澄波等人在被槍殺後，蚊蠅圍繞，令人慘不忍睹。

陳澄波死於非命以後，和他過從甚深的學生歐陽文也於1949年因白色恐怖被捕。當時，包括嘉義畫家劉新祿在內的大多數人，在這種恐怖的氣氛下，都以為畫畫會帶來災難，或是與畫家陳澄波有關係也不會平安，所以一一將各種各樣的畫作銷毀。

這種情況一直到台灣的政治步入民主化以後，才略有改善。2002年，鑒於台灣前輩藝術家傾一生之力投注於台灣近代新美術之啟蒙與發展，台灣的郵政總局特籌畫發行「台灣近代畫作郵票」系列，向社會大眾推廣台灣本土畫家之藝術成就。首套郵票以台北市立美術館館藏之四位已逝台灣畫家的作品為圖案，其中也包括陳澄波於1927年完成的〈夏日街景〉這幅畫。
