华三川（1930-2004），浙江镇海人，现当代杰出的工笔人物画家，曾担任中国美协会员、上海美术家协会理事、上海少年儿童出出版社专业画家、上海市文史研究馆馆员；擅长人物画及连环画，曾获全国连环画评选一、二等奖和荣誉奖。1976年以来从事人物仕女画创作，作品传播海内外。2004年7月16日，华老因脑梗昏迷导致心力衰竭在家乡镇海病逝。出版有《华三川仕女画集》数种

华三川，1930年出生于上海一个城市贫民家庭，1938年8岁读小学时，路经城隍庙的一个画店。华三川被画在纸上的山川、人物、花鸟动中等图画所吸引，想不到一支笔竟有如此神奇的妙用。他绘画天赋的显露，被人们誉之为“神童”，他为人们画门神，画灶王。后到一个戏院里学画布景，这里是师傅带徒弟，学徒首先是替师傅干家务，学艺只有在打下手时和业余时间偷着学……
解放后开始从事连环画创作，1960年调到上海少年儿童出版社工作。为读者奉献出一百多部连环画作品，还有大量插图、单幅画，是一个勤奋多产的画家。。他画画的纸是用一刀一刀来记数的。连环画作品有《交通站的故事》、《白毛女》、《青年近卫军》、《王孝和》、《刘胡兰》等一百余种。华三川创作的第一部连环画作品是《七桂芝》连环画；封笔之作是1985年由浙江人民美术出版社出版的《明珠》；
迄今为止共创作百余本连环画作品；从事连环画的时间为35年。20世纪50年代，连环画界除了“南顾北刘”之称外，还有“南华北杨”之说，华三川曾和北京的职业连环画家杨逸麟，各领风骚于大江南北。
如今，华老的不少作品已成为海内外藏家竞相收藏的瑰宝。 　
五十年代初从事舞台美术工作，对《白毛女》这个角色耳濡目染，十分熟悉，无疑给他对人物塑造提供了方便。连环画《白毛女》在六十年代问世后，受到国内外的好评。人们不能不叹服华三川的造型能力，用线描黑白画把人物动势和微妙透视关系画得如此生动而富于表现。在此同时他用绢本彩色精绘40多幅，以大开本儿童故事读物出版，十分精彩，读者争相购买，不少美术爱好者当作范本临摹。 　　
六十年代以后，特别是描绘国内题材的作品，作者采用以中国传统毛笔勾勒为主的造型方法，同时又用钢笔画线条来丰富画面。在《白毛女》作品里有出色的体现。如杨家在昏暗灯光下的破旧什物，杨白劳被推出黄家后的风雪迷漫气氛，充满尘埃的破庙、潮湿阴暗的山洞等，都借助了钢笔画法的长处。可喜的是作者将两种方法巧妙地结合，创造出这种既符合我们民族审美习惯，又填补了白描技法单．调的画法，也就是华三川享誉于连环画坛的一种绘画风格。
九十年代初，台湾艺术图书公司收集了华三川历年为挂历所作的仕女图90幅，精印华三川美人画集《干娇百媚》和《浓妆淡抹》两册；福建美术出版社，天津杨柳青画社，上海古籍出版社等国内外众多出版单位也竟相出版华三川先生的画集；至今已有《锦瑟年华》；《华三川人物画集》；《华三川人物线描画搞》，《华三川绘新百美图》《华三川人物新作选》等十多部大型画集出版发行。收藏华三川先生作品，连环画，挂历和画集的美术机构，藏馆，收藏家和美术爱好者遍及全国和世界各地。
台湾《艺术家》杂志评介说：“华三川人物画，多数是以中国古代的历史、小说、神话、民间传说中的美人为主题，所以一提到华三川的画，人们的脑海里就自然涌现出他笔下的美女——婉约有致，楚楚动人的风姿。”　在海峡两岸处于隔绝状态时期，台湾收藏家曾通过多种渠道收藏他画的仕女挂历。如今，华老的不少作品已成为海内外藏家竞相收藏的瑰宝。
华三川先生在他的六十年艺术生涯中，勤奋耕耘，勇攀高峰，在继承传统的基础上，进行变革和创新，
形成了自己独特的艺术风格，在中国工笔人物画领域里独树一帜，引人注目。
华三川先生还为中国的美术事业培养了众多优秀的学生，为传承和发扬中华优秀传统文化事业作出了重大贡献。华三川自己比较满意的五部连环画作品：《白毛女》《交通站的故事》《桃太郎》《项链》《表》。

华先生的工笔仕女画，有盛唐张萱、周昉的华贵、富丽、细腻至臻的遗风；有吴门画派的清秀、恬静和典雅；有陈老莲的凝重和质朴；也有海派四任的风韵。华先生的画在色彩上继承了传统工笔人物画的技法，也融会吸收了西洋水彩画的表现技巧，中西合壁相得益彰。
从艺术样式来看，华三川开了“新仕女画”或“新美人画”的先河，他笔下的仕女或美女，以其曲雅和恬静、灵秀和质朴的艺术品格，摆脱了旧式仕女画过于华丽和甜腻的习俗，有一种超然脱俗的凝重之同和优雅飘逸的灵动之气。熟悉华三川连环画作品的人都会知道，作者前一时期的作品，多是采用钢笔画画法。这种形式最早见诸于西方书刊插图，是硬笔画素描，与铜版画有关。钢笔画需要有较好的素描功底，但又不是画素描，作者根据画面需要进行黑、白、灰关系的调整，用线条疏密组成韵律、情调。
