王梦白(1888~1934), 中国现代中国画画家。名云,字梦白,号破斋主人,又号三道人,江西丰城人。父亲流寓浙江衢州(今柯城区)。因住地与三溪接壤,自号三溪渔隐,即三道人的来源。幼年在灯笼店、钱庄当学徒,刻苦读书,勤奋作画,称居所为映雪馆,又称三衢读画楼。
年轻时在上海钱庄当学徒时喜画花鸟画,学习任颐,并受到吴昌硕的指导,画艺提高很快。1919年到北京任司法部录事;1919~1924年间,由陈师曾推荐任北京美术专门学校(北平艺术专科学校)中国画系主任、教授。他的得意弟子为王雪涛、王羽仪。少为钱庄学徒,因学画任颐花鸟画,为吴昌硕所赏。后至北京,陈师曾劝其改学李,华嵒,艺事大进,并被陈推荐为北京美专教授。善花卉翎毛,喜写生,尤擅画猴。1929年曾赴日本,举办个人画展。后在天津,穷困潦倒而死。
1919~1924年间,由陈师曾推荐任北京美术专门学校(北平艺术专科学校)中国画系主任、教授。他的得意弟子为王雪涛、王羽仪。1929年4月初,王梦白应邀赴日本介绍中国艺术,在东京、大阪两地曾举办个人画展,受到日本艺术家和鉴藏家的好评,出版了《王梦白画册》。王梦白晚年寓居天津,贫穷潦倒,病不治身亡。
王梦白在北京有机会博览和临摹宋元明清绘画真迹,其中以沈周、陈淳、徐渭、林良等明代诸家作品最为他所喜爱。他在广泛吸收的基础上,加以变化,独创一格。他画花卉翎毛,亦长于山水、人物,尤长于动物,经常到动物园观察写生和观看动物影片。所画猴子千姿百态,生动有趣,不落俗套。王梦白还以书法见长,并能诗,题画常有佳句。
1946年春,张大千和王雪涛在一起赏画论道、怀古说今。不知不觉,话题涉及到王雪涛的老师王梦白。王雪涛以王梦白的《红树双猿图》索题,张大千慨然题到:“远寻红树宿,深向白云啼。丙戌春孟,雪涛道兄出观。王梦白先生之殁,忽忽十二年矣。题此不胜车过之痛。爰。”落款的下方,工整地留下了两方印章,一为“张爰之印”,另为“大千”。
《红树双猿图》的作者王梦白,祖籍江西丰城,1888年生于浙江衢州,1934年病逝于天津。尽管他的人生历程,跟老家江西的关系不甚密切,在社会交往中他却始终未忘江西乡籍。据说他的名片上写着:“江西老,王云,字梦白,号破斋主人。”他的知交好友陈衡恪比他年长12岁,两人的交往既有志同道合之意,亦有乡邻桑梓之谊。王梦白早年在上海谋生,曾经在灯笼店、钱庄作学徒,业余刻苦习画。宗任伯年,并得到吴昌硕的亲自指导。民国初年,王梦白持吴昌硕代定之笔单前往北京谋职,在司法部担任录事。1915年,在司法部任职的余绍宋与司法部的若干同事一起组织“宣南画社”,请江南名画家汤定之作指导,每次聚会都邀请在北京的书画名流光临切磋,梁启超、姚华、陈衡恪、萧俊贤、王梦白等,都是雅集的常客。1920年,在陈衡恪的推荐下,32岁的王梦白担任北平艺术专科学校中国画系教授,开始了人生最辉煌的阶段。
王梦白擅长花鸟猿禽,得意之作均出自观察写生,并且能够不受传统笔法的束缚。
王雪涛曾经回忆说,王梦白作画时并不死守某种笔法,而是“转运自如”、“根据表现内容与作者之意,该用什么笔法就用什么笔法”。王雪涛称王梦白作画有“三快”,即眼快、手快、心快。王梦白的代表之作,比如现藏于中国美术馆的《豆荚蚂蚱图》、《海棠蟋蟀图》等,蚂蚱、蟋蟀的瞬间动态描绘得活灵活现,让人感受到“当其下手风雨快,笔所未到气已吞”的精熟畅快。其实,在王梦白的绘画创作中,“眼快”和“手快”都只是表面现象,“心快”才是真正的诀窍。王梦白善于观察,有着惊人的默写能力。他在动物园写生,常常是眯起一只眼,静静地看个够,然后转身背临,尽得神韵。也正是有这样的素质,他在放笔落墨的时候,没有一点雕琢之气,并且能够笔随心运,涉笔成趣。他还常常带着王雪涛一起观看动物题材的影片,情酣兴浓之时,就紧紧地抓住王雪涛的手,叮嘱他格外留意。
王梦白的画,在后期受徐青藤、华新罗、李复堂等人的影响较大。有些作品中,也有着陈衡恪的影子。比如王梦白的《菊花螃蟹》,现藏于中国美术馆,其笔法和趣味,跟陈衡恪的同类作品《蟹菊图》、《菊轴》、《菊石图》、《松菊图》等,有着异曲同工之妙。1915年,梅兰芳曾经向王梦白学习绘画。每星期一、三、五,王梦白亲往梅宅,现场示范作画技巧。1924年,梅兰芳的30岁生日,王梦白与凌植支、姚华、陈衡恪、齐白石等一起在梅宅合作绘画,王梦白画了一只张嘴的八哥,栩栩如生。此画是梅兰芳最珍爱的绘画作品,张挂于梅家的书房。
