李松涛别名李松，天津杨柳青人。擅长中国美术史论。曾在解放军部队从事美术工作。1957年入中央美术学院，先后在美术史系、中国画系学习，毕业后留校任《美术研究》编辑，并讲授中国古代美术史。历任中国美协《美术》月刊副主编，《中国美术》主编，美术杂志社社长，中国美协第四届理事，炎黄艺术馆副馆长。曾任《中国大百科全书·美术卷》、《中国美术全集》编委，《齐白石全集》第七、九卷主编。编著有《徐悲鸿年谱》、《韩熙载夜宴图》、《万山层林·李可染》、《张择端》、《顾闳中》、《黄胄》、《徐渭生平与其绘画成就》等。
