徐崇嗣,南唐画家。徐熙孙。擅画草虫、禽鱼、蔬果、花木及蚕茧等。其画初承家学,因不合当时图画院程式和风尚,遂改学黄筌、黄居寀父子。后自创新体,所作不用墨笔钩勒,而直接以彩色晕染,世称“没骨图”,也称“没骨花”。兄崇勋、弟崇矩,均擅画花鸟,崇矩并工士女。

徐崇嗣曾参加描绘南唐中主元旦赏雪图的集体创作,负责图写池沿禽鱼。进入北宋后,由于当时“黄家富贵”成为北宋宫廷花鸟画的标准,徐崇嗣便效诸黄之格,创造了一种不用墨笔,直以彩色图之的没骨画法。北宋宣和御府中所藏徐崇嗣画,“率皆富贵图绘,谓如牡丹、海棠、桃竹、蝉蝶、繁杏、芍药之类为多”,与野逸画风已有所不同。
“没骨”技法为南朝梁张僧繇所创。唐朝杨升用“没骨法”画山水,称为“没骨山水”。北宋徐崇嗣用“没骨法”画花卉,他是“没骨花”的创始人。。《图画见闻志》说:“(徐崇嗣)其画皆无笔墨,惟用五彩布成。”《图绘宝鉴》认为徐崇嗣“画花鸟,绰有祖风,又出新意,不用描写,止以丹粉点染而成,号没骨图,以其无笔墨骨气而名之,始于崇嗣也。”

Xu Chongsi once participated in the collective creation of pictures of snow appreciation on New Year's Day in the middle of the Southern Tang Dynasty. After entering the Northern Song Dynasty, because "Huang Jia Fu Gui" became the standard of the Royal flower and bird painting in the Northern Song Dynasty, Xu Chongsi followed the example of Huang and created a boneless painting method that did not use ink and was directly painted in color. Xu Chongsi's paintings in Xuanhe Imperial Palace in the Northern Song Dynasty are "rich and precious in rate", which are called as peony, crabapple, peach and bamboo, cicada butterfly, apricot, peony and so on", which are different from the wild style of painting.
The technique of "boneless" was created by Liang Sengbo of the Southern Dynasty. Yang Sheng of Tang Dynasty painted landscapes with "boneless method", which is called "boneless landscapes". Xu Chongsi of the Northern Song Dynasty painted flowers with the method of "boneless flower". He was the founder of "boneless flower". "Records of Pictures Seeing and Hearing" says: "Xu Chongxi's paintings are all made of colorful cloth without pen and ink." "Tu Painting Bao Jian" thinks that Xu Chongsi "painted flowers and birds, which is full of ancestral style and innovative, without describing, but only dyed with red powder. It is called"Boneless Painting"because it has no pen and ink spirit. It began in Chongsi too."
