《斗牛图》册页绢本水墨，纵44厘米，横40.8厘米 中国台北故宫博物院藏）        此图绘两牛相斗的场面，风趣新颖。一牛前逃，似力怯，另一牛穷追不舍，低头用牛角猛抵前牛的后腿。双牛用水墨绘出，以浓墨绘蹄、角，点眼目、棕毛，传神生动地绘出斗牛的肌肉张力、逃者喘息逃避的憨态、击者蛮不可挡的气势。牛之野性和凶顽，尽显笔端。可见画家对生活的观察细致入微，作品不拘常规、生意昂然，不愧为传世画牛佳作。
       戴嵩向来以画牛著称。他的画牛和韩干的画马同样著名。合称“韩马戴牛”。戴嵩有一幅“斗牛图”被宋朝的大臣马知节所收藏。马知节非常珍视这幅图。有一天，天气晴朗干燥，马知节把这幅“斗牛图”从箱底拿出来，放在大厅前晒太阳。一个农夫前来撽租税，看见这幅图。他看著看著，不禁笑了出来。马知节在旁觉得很奇怪，便问农夫：“你懂得画吗？这张图有什么可笑啊？”农夫回答说：“我只是个种田人，并不懂得画，但是却很了解活生生的牛。牛打架的时候，一定把尾巴紧紧地夹在大腿中间，力气再大的人也没有办法把它拉出来。可是你看这张‘斗牛图’，两只牛气冲冲地在打斗，而它们的尾巴却举得高高的。这根本和实际情形不一样嘛！”马知节听了，对这农夫的见识非常佩服。
       另：《唐朝名画录》说他画牛能“穷其野性筋骨之妙”，所画《斗牛图》《三牛图》《归牧图》等作品，被视为绝世佳作。其中，《斗牛图》被杜处士所收藏。有一天，杜处士将这幅画拿出来晾晒，有位牧童路过时仔细看了《斗牛图》，忍不住“嗤”笑一声，杜处士惊奇地问小孩笑什么，牧童指着图画说：“牛相斗时，力气集中在角上，尾巴是夹在两股中间，可笑画牛的人不懂斗牛的道理，让牛尾翘起来摇晃。”杜处士听了十分叹服。显然，戴嵩画斗牛时，缺乏细致观察斗牛细节而造成误笔。但是，瑕不掩瑜，这幅画仍是久享盛誉的名作。
