刘伯年（1902－1990）重庆人。名思若，署伯岩、伯年父、今是楼。幼年失怙，家境贫寒，弱冠之年就读于成都四川美术学校，年24，因仰慕画坛巨擘吴昌硕，孤身一人往上海投师学艺。因战乱，途中辗转两月有余，抵沪时缶翁已于一月前仙逝。怅然之余投考新华艺大，得长自己五岁的吴昌硕弟子王个簃赏识，后随之转入昌明艺专。从此入个簃门墙，成为缶庐再传弟子，靠老师扶携资助，得以完成学业。其间复与大风堂张氏昆仲游，遍览大量前贤佳制，胸襟渐阔。刘伯年继承了缶翁熔诗、书、画、印于一炉的艺术真谛，章法上以奇险出之。颇具新意；又受张大千的影响，注重宋元真迹的学习，山水、人物、翎毛等各擅胜场，作道士、仕女有唐宋人风。

上个世纪40年代初，刘伯年因治一手好川菜而成为上海最著名的川菜馆“蜀腴”的经理，因距云起楼很近，又擅绘事，与潘君诺、尤无曲交。建国初，百废俱兴。北京故宫博物馆张珩欲请刘伯年参与文物整理与临摹工作，潘天寿想请他去浙江美院任教。王个簃则推荐他参加上海中国画院。不意一夕之间，厄运突来。他什么地方都没去成，因其连襟是国民党官僚（曾任解放前上海农民银行行长）而被打成“历史反革命”，锒铛入狱，关在有名的上海“提篮桥”。20年不能作画，后虽得平反昭雪，任上海文史馆馆员，但疾病一身，垂垂老矣，其晚境凄凉，靠子女接济为活。晚年尝临新罗山人八尺绢本人物大画《老吾老图》，与原作毕肖，观者称道不已。卒于上个世纪80年代末90年代初。其作品失散极多，有《今是楼艺概》存世，能见其艺术之一斑。
