金捷中，浙江省青田县人。
1953年入东北美术专科学校附中学习，1957年鲁迅美术学院中国画系学习，1961年毕业后到中央民族学院艺术任教。
曾任中央民族学院中国画教研室主任、教授、北京工笔重彩画会副会长；中国美术家协会会员、北京中国画研究会会员。
擅长少数民族题材的人物画，工写兼长。作品笔墨精到，色调和谐，人物形象生动，富有时代气息和少数民族特点。
其作品《景颇女民兵》、《心事》、《火把节》、《甘庶摇篮曲》、《葡萄架下》、《老校长》、《酥油香茶庆丰收》、《酥油香茶蓝曲》等多次在国内外展出并在报刊上发表，有的作品获北京市优秀美术作品奖和全国教师美术作品展览优秀奖。
有作品刊入《北京中国画选》、《中国画新作选》、《中青年人物画选集》、《工笔人物新画》等画册。曾先后在河北、河南、辽宁等地举办个人画展。
1985年随中国美术家代表团访问印度、泥泊尔。
发表有《中国画的线与工笔画》等文章，为建国40周年设计邮票小型张《民族大团结》。?
亦擅壁画、插图，曾创作《藏族歌舞》、《中国少数民族歌舞》等大型壁画。曾为《中国少数民族常识》、《中国民间节日》、《中国少数民族神话传说选》等文学作品插图。
