1952年生于广西柳城。1982年毕业于广西艺术学院获学士学位留校任教。1987年就读于中央美术学院中国画系，研修中国人物、山水。1993年调到深圳市宝安区群众文化艺术馆工作。2007年任中国禅林画院顾问、中国禅林画院学术委员会主任至今。曾任宝安区美协主席、宝安画院院长等职。曾在中国美术馆、深圳博物馆举办个人作品展；在新加坡、日本举办艺术交流展。作品多次入选全国、省、市美展，多次获得金、银、铜等奖项；在《人民日报》、《光明日报》、《文化报》、《文艺报》、《美术》、《美术之友》等报刊、杂志上发表多幅作品，并作专题介绍。已出版个人专集五部，《莫建文画集》、《莫建文图像纪录》、《莫建文人物画赏析》、《莫建文山水画赏析》被收入《今日中国美术》。
