沈定庵1927年2月1日出生，号小山，浙江绍兴人。曾在绍兴鲁迅纪念馆、绍兴鲁迅图书馆工作，1980年退休。幼承家学喜习书画，早年事师冯凌云、林众可诸人，后又得徐生翁指授。学书编临汉魏诸碑，善于兼取并蓄。擅多种书体尤以隶书见长，所作伟而秀，雄而润，力厚骨劲，气韵生动。作品多次入选国内外重大书法展览并被收入专集，在多家专业报刊发表或被博物馆、艺术馆收藏及碑刻。作为21名中日著名书法家之一出席1987年“中日兰亭书会”。著有《论王羲之的书法艺术及其思想》、《徐生翁先生及其书法艺》等论文。中国书法家协会理事，书协浙江分会常务理事，中国书法家协会浙江分会副主席，西泠印社社员，兰亭书会会长，绍兴市书协主席，绍兴市政协常委。擅长书法，作品曾参加全国第一届书法篆刻展览，国际书法展览，西泠印社展等。著有《沈定庵书法作品选》、《沈定庵隶书二种》、《定庵随笔》等。当代隶书大家。
沈定庵先生出身书香门弟，家学渊源深厚，父亲华山先生是大画家王一亭的入室弟子，曾在绍兴约集越中知名书画家，组织镜湖画社，自任社长。庶母诸氏，也擅丹青。沈定庵先生五六岁时，常在父亲的画室中翻阅画册，信手涂鸦。一日，邑中著名书画家徐生翁到沈定庵家来，见到他习的字，大加赞许，嘱父加以诱导。以后，他开始临摹伊秉绶的《默庵集锦》，每每心摹手追，几至废寝忘食。一次上街，偶然瞥见一家店铺里挂着伊秉绶的手迹，顿时如醉如痴，双腿入定一般，再也挪不动，竟大胆开口求借。店主摇头说：“不能借。但你要喜欢，可以到这里来临写。”他果然回家连夜磨墨盈瓯，备好纸笔，第二天一早就如约去临摹。天赋秉性加上勤奋好学，使他进步很快。

笑谈一鸿儒，书坛一名家，外貌如弥陀再世，内心却童未泯。这是沈定庵10多年来定格在笔者脑海中的一幅大写意。今年已76岁的沈定庵，方脸、宽额、肥耳、细眼，一个典型的老绍兴。冬天头上戴一顶暗红八角帽，脖上围一条丝质花巾，一红一花，让他很快从芸芸众生中跳脱出来，打上了儒雅倜傥的标志，就像他的隶书，由汉而入，师承伊秉绶、徐生翁，却又独辟蹊径，自成一体。
在徐生翁先生耄耋之年，年已三十的沈定庵立雪徐门，终使徐生翁破例收了他这个门徒。从此书艺大进。
1987年，沈定庵应邀赴新加坡参加国际兰亭书法联展。他带去的一幅作品是徐文长诗：山深熟石榴，向日便开口。深山少人收，颗颗明珠走。当时新加坡的书家见了这幅作品，便竖起大拇指：“伊秉绶！”而沈定庵却脸红了，觉得自己的书法个性还不够显明。从此更下苦功，穷其变通。
1999年，沈定庵再次应邀赴新加坡举办个展。这时的沈定庵神定气足，目光炯炯。面对潮涌般的参观人流，他缓缓漫步于自己的书法作品间，这时有当地同道名家怂恿沈定庵当场露一手。沈定庵也不推辞，脱下大衣，摘掉帽子，卷起双袖，向四周扫了一圈，嘿嘿笑着，挥毫便成一诗：“海上方壶景，狮城处处新。兰亭修禊日，俯仰即嘉宾。”在场的人都窃窃私语：

每年兰亭书法节上，沈定庵总是一个亮点。在曲水流觞即兴吟诗，在右军祠内挥毫泼墨，在席间喝绍兴老酒，吃红烧大肉，满脸红光，细眼微眯，谈笑风生，率的天性便一览无余。’91绍兴国际兰亭书法节上，沈定庵在人潮的簇拥下，款款走到一张四方桌前，舔笔运腕立就“晋竭右军祠，行吟曲水边，兰亭邀远客，欢笑落樽前”，掌声四起。沈定庵又被前呼后拥“挟持”到一小屋内，索其墨宝。汗珠早就沁满了他的前额，脸红得发亮，于是索性脱了西服，一幅端庄凝重的隶书“慎思笃行”顷刻写就。有人看了赞曰：沈定庵的字劲道是太足了！另一个人附和道：“喝点老酒还要足呢！”沈定庵接口笑道：“没老酒喝，喝茶！”说着，随手端起桌上的一杯茶，大喝一口，小孩一般地笑了起来。
画家吴冠中曾打过这样一个比喻，艺术犹如一间大房子，只有将所有的门窗都打开，才能八面来风，进出自如。沈定庵会画能写，又善于结交鸿儒，日积月累，旁类艺术就如一扇扇打开的门窗，在他心中通透无比。
古越书坛，历来才技精湛者甚多，书法泰斗沈定庵便是其中之一。沈老出身于书香门第，学书遍临汉魏诸碑，擅多种书体，尤其以超凡脱俗的隶书见长。尽管名声响彻国内，但年岁已高的沈定庵并没停止脚步，依旧为书法事业奋斗着。为了绍兴的书法事业，沈老前后花费7年多时间，搜集绍兴近现代书法名家资料、作品，编成《近百年绍兴书画、篆刻名家小传》。

书法跟做人一样，一定要端端正正
走进沈老家，书香扑面而来。与沈老交谈是种享受，他言语间谈笑风生，眉宇间神清气爽。沈老虽师承伊秉绶、徐生翁，在书法上却独辟蹊径，自成一家。沈老的书法作品，不管是斗方还是条幅，长卷还是横披，都融朴茂、谨严、古拙、雅致于一体，他的书法体势雄强而又低回婉转，笔力遒劲而又意态丰盈，既蕴含了“碑学”的高度，又展现了“帖学”的风神。
沈定庵6岁那年，父亲华山先生描摹了一幅西藏班禅的画，由年幼的沈定庵题了字，悬挂在他的镜湖画社里。一天，著名书画家徐生翁造访镜湖画社，寒暄几句之后，徐老先生的目光落在了这幅画的题字上，当他得知是沈定庵所写，便叮嘱华山先生：“这个题字别看东倒西歪的，但有一定的风格，应该好好培养。”
时隔70多年，沈老把小时候的这件事写进了关于徐生翁的小传。从那年起，他与书法结下了不解之缘。14岁那年，沈定庵曾追随父亲去广东湛江，回绍兴后，于上世纪50年代举办首次个人书画展，那年他30多岁。之后，沈定庵成功举办过很多个人书法展。尽管如此，但沈定庵始终念念不忘第二故乡湛江。上世纪80年代中期，沈老终于有机会再赴湛江，展出自己的书法作品，这两地办的几次展览是沈老印象最为深刻的。
书法大家博爱的气度中始终有着对故乡的“归属感”。这是年事已高的沈老依然潜心创作《近百年绍兴书画、篆刻名家小传》的原因之一。
对于学习书法，沈老有着自己精到的见解：“书法就是要有恒心，学一个帖，写一个碑，开始的时候一定要像它。时间长了领会了，等神似后，就要主动创新。有一次我写到一个‘君子’的‘君’’，下面有个‘口’字，我这个‘口’写得不方不正，父亲看到后严厉地批评我。从这个细小的事情看，书法跟做人一样，一定要端端正正。”自此以后，沈定庵凡下笔前，必先想一想父亲的教诲，别说是一个“口”字，有时候一撇一捺，他也要看个十遍八遍，斜了没有？歪了没有？他都要弄清楚才罢休。
老书法家当起了“业余作家”
除了在书法上的造诣，沈老在绘画上也表现了过人的天赋。从练书法起，他的绘画也就一起开练了。早在1958年，沈定庵的书法已家喻户晓。那个年代跟现在不一样，书法绘画更多的是爱好，不能用来谋生的。所以许多亲朋好友找到沈定庵，让他给他们写个条幅、画幅画什么的，沈定庵这个人比较热情，从来不拒绝。但后来发现画一幅作品要花很长时间，而他的工作又很忙，所以他就放弃了绘画。也有人对他放弃绘画表示可惜，可沈定庵却觉得，书法到今天有所建树，那还得“感谢”当年的“放弃”。
1979年，退休后的沈定庵已全身心地投入到书法上。2000年，已经在古越书坛上赫赫有名的沈老，开始把目光投向绍兴老一辈卓有成就的书画篆刻家，他要把自己小时侯的亲身经历、父亲与这些书画家的交往点滴汇集起来，他要为他们写一本书。沈老一改以往小传文体较枯燥的说明介绍性体裁，他改用散文、随笔的形式，写出《近百年绍兴书画、篆刻名家小传》。在沈老笔下，他将许多著名的书画篆刻家如徐生翁、袁梦白、赵雪侯、范守白、李鸿梁、周茂斋等等鲜活的一面栩栩如生地呈现给读者。他说，这本传记，对于后人研究绍兴书画家们的创作艺术，有一定的作用。
