方介堪，名严，字介堪、原名文榘。生于清光绪二十七年，卒于一九八七年，浙江泰顺人。工书，能画，尤长于篆刻。曾延为故宫博物院编辑。四十岁后写松梅竹石，有瞿山遗意。历任上海美专、新华艺专、中国艺校教授、及教育部二次全国美展会审查委员。著有《玺印》、《文综》、《两汉官印》、《古印辨伪》、《秦汉对识拾遗》、《介堪论印》等书。
先世居泰顺县，祖父养卿进府学，始著籍永嘉。父冠英，精书法，有名于时。因经商失利，家道中落。介堪幼进蒙塾，15岁为鼎源钱庄学徒。两年后依父设摊刻字，心灵手巧，术艺非常。1920年，从金石家谢磊明治印，协助选刻整篇古文辞印章，谢氏家富收藏，5年中得以广览印谱。勤学苦练，识艺大进。1926年，随邑绅吕文起赴沪，师事鄞县赵叔孺，并以邻居关系结识经亨颐、柳亚子、何香凝等名流，以刻玉印驰名上海滩，加入西泠印社。上海美专校长刘海粟聘其任教篆刻，续在文艺学院（艺专）兼课。得和郑曼青、黄宾虹、张大千、马孟容等共事，广结墨缘；张大千尤称莫逆。全国首届美展在南市文庙举行，聘为评审委员。沪上收藏家求鉴定古印书画者踵相接。凡遇珍印异章，必钩摹保存，积久得古玉印摹本300多方。1935年至南京，寓居刻印一年。1937年，张大千邀赴北平，为学历所限任故宫博物院博物馆试用科员，作品曾参加中山公园金石书画联展。抗战爆发后仓皇南归，寇患日深，温州三度沦陷，父丧妻亡，困苦颠沛，无奈在当地贸易服务筹备处打杂。抗战胜利
后，1946年上学期在瑞安中学任教。此后复应张大千邀前往上海。次年，所刻“中兴元首”石章获第二届全国美展一等奖，成为上海美术家协会会员。后以母老回温，在百货公司大楼办过个人画展。解放初，投资50元参加丽田造纸厂工作。1952年起，任温州地区（市）文物管理委员会副主任。1956年加入国民党革命委员会。历年征集故家遗藏，抢救出土文物，保护珍品，策划展览陈列，筹设温州博物馆，成绩卓著。至今馆藏文物名列全省前茅，实与当年辛勤有关。“文化大革命”中受到冲击，抄家多次，印稿书籍毁失者大半。所幸耄耋之年，得见拨乱反正，被推为中国书法家协会名誉理事，西泠印社副社长，温州市文联副主席、市人民代表、省政协委员、市书协和美协名誉主席。1987年8月25日逝世。毕生从事艺术创作，擅长金石，先后治印2万余方，郭沫若评其印章“炉火纯青”，堪称篆刻大师。

初露头角

堪还不到30岁，已经比他刻好得多了。此后，又在不同场合称赞方介堪“才资高远，后生可畏”。艺术大师出自真诚的赞赏，震撼艺坛。刘海粟闻名，诚聘方介堪为上海美专金石教授。此后，方介堪不仅是经亨颐、何香凝等人“寒之友”社的中坚，还同金石书画界元老名流褚德彝、曾农髯、黄宾虹、丁辅之、王福厂、高野侯、楼辛壶、郑午昌，及潘天寿、林散之、谢稚柳、唐云等人，都有交往。其中与张大千的友谊最深，交情长达半个多世纪。他们一起受聘为上海艺专教授和1929、1937年第一、第二届全国美展审查委员，并于1937年春节在北京举办“张大千方介堪金石书画联展”，旋即不远千里同游雁荡。这十年间，方介堪利用良好的环境，在书法、绘画和诗文方面取得了相应的提高，成为擅长篆刻又多才多艺的艺术家。几年间还连续出版了几部印谱，和古代玉质印章专集《古玉印汇》，钩摹完成并初步编定大型古文字工具书《玺印文综》。抗战期间，他回到温州，在饱尝了沦陷离乱的困苦，又经历了中年丧妻之痛，惟悴不堪。抗战胜利，他应约到上海会晤张大千，很快恢复了艺术活力，并在次年以精湛的几方印作，获得为纪念抗战胜利一周年举办的全国美展一等奖。
历任职务
新中国成立后，人民政府任命方介堪为温州市丈物管理委员会副主任，后来又兼任温州市博物馆馆长，他热情投身地方文物工作，为收购、搜集、抢救流散在民间的文物，跋涉农村山区。温州博物馆能有现在藏品居全省第三位的规模，方介堪筚路蓝缕之功不可埋没。应国家文化部之邀，他的作品先后两次选送日本展览。1963年，温州工艺美术研究所成立，他兼任副主任，并为他设有创作室。他刻制了如毛泽东《词六首》。
最后十年
