魏小明1957年生于广西北海。画家，雕塑家。1981年毕业于中央工艺美术学院；1988年毕业于奥地利维也纳皇家美术学院，获硕士学位。1992年任教于中央美术学院。连环画《黑骏马》《一个女人的刚毅》是其成名作与代表作。

魏小明1957年出生于广西北海。像那个时代小城镇的很多孩子一样，他的童年是在文化闭塞和物质匮乏的环境中度过的。十二岁的时候，一次偶然的机会，魏小明遇到了一对艺术家夫妇，他们来自广州美术学院，因“文革”被下放到北海。这对艺术家夫妇潜心地教授素来爱画画的魏小明，使他学到了正规的素描等绘画基本功，为他的艺术之路奠定了坚实的基础。
17岁时，魏小明与许多同伴一起上山下乡。在农村期间，魏小明始终痴迷于绘画，在劳动间隔随时拿起画笔，潜心练习绘画技能，他画遍了乡下的山山水水，画遍了村里的老老少少。
1977年，返城后的魏小明报考了广西艺术学院，专业考试第一名。当时到广西招生的中央工艺美术学院的黄国强爱才如命，当即向广西艺术学院及其他有关部门交涉，直接把魏小明招入了中央工艺美术学院装璜系，1981年毕业并以优异成绩留校任教。
在八十年代，魏小明给奥地利维也纳皇家美术学院寄去了自己的作品，包括著名的《黑骏马》。1986年，魏小明成为维也纳皇家美术学院建院300年来第一个中国硕士生。走出国门的魏小明大开眼界，除了上课以外，他经常徜徉于博物馆，浸泡于西方博大精深的艺术世界。版画专业修满学分后，魏小明又开始进修建筑与雕塑，两年后他拿下了硕士学位。
在奥期间魏小明参与了欧洲各国多种展览，并举行个展。1988荣获奥地利“杰出艺术贡献奖”。维也纳皇家美术学院教授爱娃·丁·福克斯评价他：“魏小明以他的正直与才华，在艺术上走向先驱者的地位，由于他的艺术表现进而丰富了奥地利艺术舞台。”
