1931年3月生于江苏省南京市。中央美术学院教授。1945年春至1948年夏在陶行知创办的育才学校绘画组学习。1948年至1956年在中国人民解放军中做美术工作。1956年至1961年在中央美术学院雕塑系学习，毕业后留校任教。曾任中央美术学院雕塑系系主任、首都城市雕塑艺术委员会副主任、首都建筑艺术委员会委员、中国雕塑学会常务理事、《雕塑》杂志编委和中国工艺美术学会雕塑专业委员会顾问等职。　　
1961年创作《民兵》为中国美术馆收藏。　　
1963年到1980年创作木雕《民间演唱》曾参加全国性美展和赴台参加两岸雕塑家作品联展。1976年受命任毛主席纪念堂雕塑组组长，负责组织领导全国百多名雕塑家集体创作纪念堂大厅内的毛主席坐像和纪念堂前后广场上4组大纪念性群雕。　　
1979年和中国美术家协会副主席刘开渠率领中国雕塑家代表团赴意大利、法国访问考察，并著有访问记《雕林漫步》一书。　
1984-1985年在北京石景山区政府支持下组织策划创建了"石景山雕塑公园"约有20多位雕塑家参加共计30多件作品。本人作品《卓玛》、《星星》等建在园内。
1988年创作青铜雕塑《教育家徐特立》，纪念像立在北京理工大学、延安大学和长沙徐特立纪念馆中，并为中国美术馆收藏。
