他出身贫寒,自幼酷爱美术,16岁便在寺庙里学习画佛像、雕像,绘制和设计寺庙宗教题材的绘画。他天生聪颖,在师傅们的言传身教下,青少年时期就显露出了超群的绘画才能。在经历过了长期的勤学苦练之后,他的技艺得到了不断的提高和发挥。新中国成立后,党和政府把他安排到旗文化馆工作,他从心眼里感谢共产党和新中国。他画过佛、塑过佛,也拜过佛,但他更信仰心中最大的“佛”——中国共产党,并在年过古稀以后光荣的加入了中国共产党,并由此焕发了艺术青春,以极大的精力和热情全身心投入到蒙古族民间工艺美术的搜集和整理创作上。在民间工艺美术创作上,留下了大量的精品力作。
宝石柱最大的艺术贡献在于蒙古族民间图案工艺设计和创作。传统的蒙古族图案工艺就是一切器物的造型和一切器物的装饰的平面设计图。但宝石柱不拘泥于传统的蒙古族工艺图案设计,他以现实生活为基础,善于观察生活但不又照抄生活,巧妙运用美好的幻想和艺术夸张,但又极具现实生活意义。他大胆创新,成功的将传统图案的实用性上升到艺术性,并赋予新的美感和意义,从而创作出了吉祥、富贵、典雅的艺术境界。他作画自制毛笔、自研颜色,作品内容丰富,色彩艳丽,对比强烈而又典雅。把中原汉民族和藏民族、蒙古族的纹样成功地结合在一起,达到了和谐统一的画面布局,令人赞叹和心悦诚服。正如现任内蒙古作协副主席、著名蒙古族作家布仁巴雅尔所称赞的那样“宝石柱的图案艺术是蒙古民族民间艺术百花园中的一枝奇葩”。几十年的艺术实践,使他的技艺熟能生巧,巧能生辉,炉火纯青,终于积淀成了一幅幅精美的图画作品。他绘制的寺庙装饰图案,富丽堂皇、情趣横生,具有浓重的蒙古族特色而又别具一格,色彩鲜明强烈,线条流畅自如,设色优美细腻。他塑造的佛像,造型千变万化,形象栩栩如生,灵活多变,既有宗教的庄严,又有世俗的生动。
作品(8张)宝石柱纯熟的技艺来自于长期的刻苦实践,他善于观察,注意积累和搜集民间图案。他博采众长,勤于探索、勇于创新,他用辛勤的汗水浇灌的蒙古民族工艺美术之花,终于赢得了党和人民的尊重,赢得了全国知名美术家的关注。1980年,他光荣的出席了内蒙古自治区的群英会。1975年他的作品在北京《民族画报》上发表,1976年他的作品在《内蒙古画报》上发表。1979年中央民族大学教授、专家看了他的图案后,高度称赞他的图案作品“是目前我国少数民族工艺美术作品中的精品,实属罕见”,并当场表示聘他为该校客座教授。1980年,中央美术学院教授伍必端先生对老人给予极高的评价,并决定把他调到北京,在中央美院开辟一个工作室,供他整理和研究蒙古族民间图案艺术。但老人有着浓厚的家乡情结,不愿离开奈曼,最后婉言谢绝。自此之后,又有现任中国美术家协会主席刘大为,原内蒙古美术家协会主席思沁,内蒙古人民出版社编审孟喜元,当时的哲盟版画家萨因章,乌恩琪,山丹等到访和看望。
宝石柱老人不但在蒙古族民间美术上有很深的造诣,而且他还涉足版画、雕刻、剪纸等绘画领域,是绘画创作的多面手。在每一个历史时期都留下了一批主题鲜明,内容健康向上,讴歌党和人民的精品力作。他创作的木刻作品大多数取材于蒙古族的出行、庆典和寺庙喇嘛的祭祀等活动场景。造型准确,形象生动,神态各异,画面场景庞大,构图严谨,气氛或热烈、或庄严,黑白对比强烈而又和谐,生活气息浓,极具蒙古族特色。他的代表作品《观灯》,被中国美术馆收藏,《回府》赴日本展出,并受到日本友人的称赞。
他所复制的大型泥塑《收租院》,是在1966年开始的文革动乱的年代中完成的。面对文革混乱的局面,他不闻不问,悄悄的把自己关进小平房里,插上门、堵严窗户,静静地复制。搞泥塑十分不易,它需要特殊的泥土,特殊的工艺,特殊的制作方法,尤其是面对着《收租院》这样大型雕塑里的一百多个千姿百态、神情各异、不同阶层、不同地位的人物形象,其难度可想而知。尤其是没有实物做参照,仅凭图片和报刊上的文字说明进行制作,其难度更是不言而喻。除此之外,这又是一项极付体力的劳动,仅泥土一项就需要几十吨,他没有助手,亲自一人到离镇里几十里以外的地方去找,去挖,并运回来,一个人严格加工,粉碎、过筛、挑选、搅拌,每天工作12小时以上,其劳动的难度和强度是常人难以想象的。经过一千多个日日夜夜的劳作,终于完成了这项艰巨而浩大的工程。1982年,一位加拿大籍华人学者回乡探亲,参观了泥塑《收租院》,称赞“复制的太像了,这简直和四川真的收租院没什么两样,我为我的故乡有这样高水平的有才华的艺人而骄傲”。?
