1935年出生于浙江温州，1959年毕业于中央美术学院，1959年至1971年任教于广州美术学院，1980年至1982年任教于中央美术学院，1984年起任广州画院专业画家。
学习期间，师从韦启美、李斛、靳尚谊、侯一民学素描；师从李桦、古元、彦涵、黄永玉攻创作，在造型基本功和创作两方面打下良好的基础。擅长多种版画、水彩画、磨漆画、速写。
作品先后赴美国、日本、英国、瑞典、丹麦、芬兰、意大利、爱尔兰、韩国、朝鲜等10多个国家和我国香港、台湾展出；有多件作品在国内外获奖和被博物馆收藏。专著有“木刻技法初步”、“素描基础训练的步骤与方法”、“网版技法”、“论绘画速写”、“版画教学结构初探”等。木刻作品《归来》（1962）、《亲爱》（1980）；铜版画《永远的微笑》（1995），三件作品列入“中国百年版画”大展及画集。木刻作品《归来》（1962）列入“中国美术全集”，铜版画《永远的微笑》列入《中国美术60年》大型画册。
1998年10月，在出访意大利期间，在佛罗伦萨“学院画廊”完成对米开朗琪罗雕塑的现场素描写生工作（长期作业）。
传略1982年列入日本出版的《中国美术家名鉴》；1988年列入英国欧洲出版公司的《世界名人录》；1991年列入英国剑桥传记中心《远东大洋洲名人录》；1994年列入印度《国际名人录》、曾任中国《三版》研究会秘书长、广州画院艺术指导。
现为中国美术家协会会员、中国版画家协会会员、广州画院国家一级画家。
