张路，原名张学廉。1919年生。浙江省上虞县人。1937年中学毕业后曾在址虞县中学任教，后又在浙江省警察学校任音乐教员。1945年毕业于国立英士大学艺术科，1947年又毕业于国立杭州艺术专科学校西洋绘画科。1948年先后在上海立北中学、浙江绍兴中学任美术教员和小报编辑，这时期发表不少连环画和剪纸作品。1949年，上海解放后，编写《怎样画漫画》和《怎样刻剪纸》等书，为新中国美术知识普及与传播做出了贡献。1950年，调北京人民美术出版社，任连环画编辑室编辑，并在工作之余从事木刻创作。1957年，木刻组画《西游记》发表后，引起美术界重视。组画《西游记》以其形象优美，构图严谨别致，黑白对比巧妙而富于节奏变化，刀法流动娴熟而富于韵律，整体浑然而裁汰有致，成为建国初期名冠一时之佳作。
1958年张路被错划为右派。1959年下放到黑龙江省牡丹江垦区劳动，后任《北大荒》杂志和《北大荒画报》编辑。北大荒生气勃勃的创业生活，使他在艺术上有新的崛起，他同解放军美术工作者共同努力，使木刻作品逐渐凝聚成“北大荒”画派。张路是北大荒版画的早期作者和创始人之一。其作品既有与其他作者相同之处，亦有另辟蹊径、卓然而立之处，画风秀丽质朴并追求装饰趣味。这在当时视形式美的追求为异端的艺术气氛中，是十分难能可贵的。他的早期套色木刻《满网》、《晨曦》、《小鸭》等14件作品参加了1960年中国美术家协会、牡丹江农垦局在北京举办的《北大荒美术作品展览》。《早春》、《雨后》、《找缝插针》等12件作品，参加了1961年在北京中国美术馆展出的，由中国美术家协会、牡丹江农垦局联合主办的《牡丹江垦区版画画展》。其中《早春》、《雨后》、《满网》、《找缝插针》等6件作品由中国美术馆收藏。《牡丹江垦区版画展览》还在越南河内（1962年）、朝鲜平壤（1963年）展出过。
1962年2月，张路参加中国美术家协会组织的北大荒版画4人赴新疆写生团旅行新疆，足迹踏遍天山南北。再次激发他的创作热情，创作出一批具有西北风情的版画作品：《颂歌》、《花帽市场》、《小羊》、《野水无桥马带渡》等，并参加了在哈尔滨和北京举行的“晁楣、张禛麒、杜鸿年、张路旅行新疆版画展览”。黑龙江人民出版社出版这个画展的专集：《黑龙江版画——旅行新疆作品选》。
1962年11月，张路调入中国美术家协会黑龙江分会创作室，从事专业创作。这一时期的主要作品有《水从天上来》、《山庄》、《午休》等。作品曾参加“东北农垦总局美术作品展览”（1963）、“黑龙江、四川、广东版画展”（1963）、“第五届全国版画展”（1963）、文化部、中国美术家协会主办的“全国美术作品展”（1964）、“中日版画交流展”（1964）、“中国现代版画展”（1964香港）等多项展览。
“文化大革命”期间，痛遭劫难，致使艺术生命停止近10年，身心健康受到严重摧残。但这并没能泯灭他的艺术创作激情，一如既往，默默地伏案操刀刻画。1975年后，开始艺术道路上的最后冲刺，找来一堆堆小梨木板，夜以继日地操刀，在梨板上镌刻着自己的生活感受和人生理想。仅1975—1977年两年间，就创作约70幅黑白木刻，展示出艺术家的完善与成熟。“江青反革命集团”覆灭后，1977年7月，张路因病医治无效，猝然长逝。终年58岁。
