王树村，中国艺术研究院研究员、杰出的美术史论家、民间美术收藏家。1923年5月生于天津杨柳青镇，1945年进入天津市立美术学校学习绘画，1949年考入华北大学美术科，同年在北平市委文委会任美术干部。1952年至1955年在中央美术学院专修美术史论。曾任职于北京美术工作室、《美术》杂志社，后调入中国艺术研究院美术研究所从事研究工作，任中国艺术研究院美术研究所研究员、中国民俗学会理事，中国民间美术学会副会长、中国工艺美术学会民间工艺美术专业委员会副主任。其享受国务院专家特殊津贴，2004年获中国美术家协会授予的首批“卓有成就的美术史论家”荣誉称号，2007年获中国文学艺术联合会颁发的“第六届造型表演艺术成就奖”。

王树村先生是一位有着强烈的爱国主义情怀的学者。他十四岁时，看到日本占领下的天津，年画艺术遭受抢掠和烧毁，他的内心无限愤慨，并立志抢救民间木版年画。七十余年来，他节衣缩食，收藏了包括年画、纸马、石刻线画、灯片、玩具、剪纸、刺绣等诸多品类在内的万余件民间艺术珍品。自上世纪六十年代，他分别向中国历史博物馆、故宫博物院、中国美术馆、南京太平天国博物馆、天津杨柳青画社、天津艺术博物馆等单位捐赠了藏品，这其中不少是孤品，具有极高的艺术价值和学术价值。

王树村先生是一位脚踏实地、笔耕不缀的学者。自上世纪五十年代初开始，他为实现少年时期立下的“中国的书要中国人自己写”的宏愿，克服重重困难，逆境中从不退缩，对民间美术研究倾注了毕生心血，为中国民间美术的学科建设做出了杰出贡献。1959年出版他的第一部著作，至今已撰写民间美术研究专著75部。其中，《杨柳青年画资料集》获1960年莱比锡国际书展银质奖，《中国美术全集·石刻线画、民间年画》、《中国民间四百宝相》等多部图书获得国家出版金奖，还有十余部著作被翻译成多种文字向国外出版发行。其代表作为《中国民间美术史》，这是一项由他负责的国家艺术学重点规划项目，耗费了十年心血。全书70余万字，全面系统地阐述了中国民间美术的渊源及历史发展，被学界公认为“我国目前唯一的全面研究中国民间美术发展史的权威性专著”。

1984年至2003年，王树村先生先后应邀赴澳大利亚、前苏联、新加波、日本、马来西亚、奥地利、冰岛及香港、台湾等地讲学并举办展览。目前，世界上已有二十余个国家的博物馆和研究机构建立了王树村学术档案。
