1938年中学辍学谋生,参加第十二集团军政训处工作。受鲁迅的影响,爱上木刻艺术,刻苦学习西欧和苏联的美术作品。抗日战争期间,先后创作《血的动脉》和《铁的动脉》二套抗战画集。1940年,成为中华全国木刻界抗敌协会广东分会负责人之一。1942年,到韶关广东省立艺术专科学校教授版画。1943年美国《时代》杂志刊出《中国木刻之页》共7幅作品,其中有梁永泰的一幅。后来美国出版的《战时中华》也收入他的作品。l946年元旦,延安举行木刻展览会,展出作品180多幅,梁永泰作品亦在其中。抗战胜利后到香港,在《星岛日报》、《星岛晚报》、英文《虎报》任美术编辑,与张光宇、廖冰兄、黄新波等组织“人间画会”,并举行展览会,名为“风雨中华”,展出作品160多幅。其中部分作品被美国进步女画家格莲荷特选送到美国展出,影响很大。
1952年,回广州定居,在中华书局任美术编辑。刚刚解放的广州很难买到优质的套色版画颜料,需要从香港进口,他获得了特殊的照顾,准予免税进口,足见党和政府对他的重视与支持。中国美术家协会成立,他是首批会员之一,并任美协广州分会常务理事。成渝铁路建成通车,他创作了木刻画《从前没有人到过的地方》,刻划了那原始丛林中的飞禽走兽对隆隆开来的火车表示惊奇的情景,十分传神,被北京军事博物馆、南京博物馆及中国美术馆收藏。

梁永泰对培养子女的美术爱好也花了不少心血,他有三子两女,长子君令四岁时所作的童画已在重庆画报登载,长大后书、画皆精,特别书法尤佳,在北京一次书法比赛中获得第二名。三子卓舒、次女碧薇两兄妹国画、油画皆优,曾在广州及美国举行个人画展,他们在美国深造后,已成为美国知名的美术工作者。永泰一家可算是“美术之家”。 ]

提到版画家梁永泰,圈内人至今都还在为他感到惋惜。他在版画创作的黄金年华,因为一个意外的事故而把生命的指针永远地停留在35岁。有评论者认为,如果不是英年早逝,梁永泰很有可能与好友黄新波一道,成为现代广东版画界瞩目的两道魅力风景线。其实,何止是广东版画界,因为梁永泰的名字早已跟20世纪中国版画史之间发生了紧密的关联。梁永泰的名作《从前没有人到过的地方》,于1954年9月参加了在北京举行的第一届全国版画展览。版画家力群在题为“版画艺术的新收获”的专题文章中,对这件作品给予了高度的评价。认为“这幅画的构图,颇有些中国山水画的味道。然而这风景的情调,却是崭新的,它壮丽而深远,丰富而清新。”有意味的是,一位署名“上海工程师”的读者,给《美术》杂志编辑部写信,认为梁永泰作品画面上的那座铁路桥,类似于法国工程师在滇越铁路上设计建造的K字桥,有“帝国主义”的影子,于是从社会批判的角度对梁永泰的这件作品提出质疑。这种质疑在今天看来也许不着边际,但是在上世纪50年代初期那样的社会环境中,却是一石激起千层浪,一下子把梁永泰连同他的版画创作推向了社会公众的焦点。以至于在1955年5月全国美协第一届理事会第二次扩大会议上,与会者对梁永泰的这件作品的批评和辩护成为会议的主要话题。以这件作品为样板,引申出“难道生活是这样的吗 ”、“生活应该是怎样的呢 ”等诸多话题,乃至引申出关于“社会主义现实主义创作方法”这在当时可谓是艺术创作的核心话题的讨论。回看历史的时候,也许可以这样说,正是因为当时的那场轰轰烈烈的讨论,使得更多的人知道了梁永泰,也使得更多的人关注并喜欢上了梁永泰的版画作品。
1921年生于广东惠州的梁永泰,少年时代在其母、民间剪纸艺人许淑珍的影响下走上艺术之旅。大约在他十三四岁的时候,因为其表兄唐英伟的缘故,梁永泰跟当时蔚为前卫的广东版画界发生了关联。唐英伟比梁永泰年长6岁,毕业于广州市立美术专科学校,1934年与李桦等人共同发起组织了广东现代版画会。尽管梁永泰并没有正式加入广东现代版画会,但由于他对版画的爱好,无师自通的梁永泰经常到李桦家里看画,也经常带些刻好的作品请李桦指导。1937年卢沟桥事变发生后,梁永泰和黄宁婴、陈芦荻、陈残云、黄新波、赖少其一起,在广州街头组织诗画展览,编印《抗战诗画》。其后,梁永泰先后参加了第12集团军政训处、第四战区政治部第三组的美术工作。1939年,在中华全国木刻协会主办的“风雨中华”画展上,梁永泰的版画《歼敌》受到好评。这件作品高26.5厘米、宽53厘米,现藏于广东美术馆。画面描绘了激烈的战斗歼敌场面,远处的炮火、近处的战士、勇敢的冲锋,给人一种视觉的震撼。特别是画面右边的站在高处的司号员,他的坚定的动作,使人仿佛听到了嘹亮的冲锋号声,那是歼敌的信号,那是胜利的象征。在这期间,梁永泰创作了大量的充满斗争精神的版画作品,如现藏广东美术馆的《反抗吧!农民》组画(1939年)、《反攻声中的前线印象》(1940年)等,通过这些作品,积极宣传抗战。1942年开始,由于调到粤汉铁路艺术教育队工作,梁永泰在进行抗战题材的版画创作之外,还创作了一批反映铁路沿线生活的木刻组画,并给这批作品取名为“铁的动脉”组画,如《电力转盘》(1943年)、《加煤》(1943年)、《开辟支线》(1943年)、《锻造间》(1943年)、《修理厂》(1944年)、《等待列车通过》(1944年)、《火车出事了》(1944年)等。也正是因为对铁路生活的熟悉,促成了梁永泰在1954年创作出了《从前没有人到过的地方》那样的作品———远处是两山之间的铁路桥,桥上飞驰的火车,火车头带着滚滚的浓烟;近处是原始山林,因为火车的轰鸣而受到惊吓的山间动物,那些乱跑的野鹿和惊飞的鸟群……该作品尽管有如此开阔的场面和丰富的内容,其实画面本身并不大,高34.7厘米、宽23.9厘米而已。梁永泰曾经在1938年得到过一套精美的德国木刻刀,因为工具的精良,也为他在版画创作上追求刀法细腻的精致画面提供了必要条件。不仅如此,梁永泰对版画的每一个环节都有很高的要求。根据梁君度的回忆,梁永泰对于刻版用的梨木板要求要像玻璃一样光滑,印制的时候,也很讲究手势与技巧。“像《从前没有人到过的地方》这一作品,画面上的列车驶过桥梁时,两边的山林中受惊的飞鸟都飞上了天空,可在画面上都很小,印的时候稍用力过度,便有失比例了。”
