蒋铁峰，1938年出生于宁波市鄞州区，1964年从中央美术学院毕业后分配在云南工作十多年，曾任中国美术家协会云南分会理事，为《丑小鸭》、《小红帽》等中外名著作插图，其中《阿诗玛》的插图荣获国际儿童书籍插图奖；1979年为北京人民大会堂创作壁画《石林春晓》。1983年作为访问学者赴美，翌年定居。1985年参加纽约艺术博览会，成为首位参与美国大型艺术博览会的大陆画家，也是该大展唯一的重彩画家。他的现代重彩画颇受众多西方人青睐，多次应当地博物馆界人士邀请举办个展，促使美国画廊一度兴起重彩画热。蒋铁峰因此被美国艺术界冠以“云南画派之父”的美誉。
蒋铁峰是率先将中国现代重彩画带到国际艺术舞台的“云南画派”画家，如今的他已年逾古稀，但仍致力于艺术创作，每年都有个展在全美各地区/城市举办。他的作品注重将线条、色彩、情趣经过超越时空的变换和组织，并以绚丽斑斓的色彩突破中国传统绘画色彩单一的局限，在改变西方人认为中国艺术作品中色彩不丰富观点的同时，将西方人的审美情趣融入其中，最终由跨越中西文化差异藩篱的艺术样式形成梦幻般的艺术效果。?
