贺慕群，著名的华裔女艺术家，宁波人，出生于上海，曾先后生活在台湾、巴西、法国等地，是一位与赵无极、潘玉良等比肩的、享有盛誉的画家，其作品《玩偶系列》获法国妇女沙龙展大奖。目前贺慕群定居上海。
其作品曾经得到，欧洲商业摄影之父，中国汉皇国际文化传媒中心主席邹凌先生的高度评价。上海美术馆为一位艺术家三度举办过个展，甚为罕见，贺慕群便是其中一位。
贺慕群祖籍浙江宁波，出生于上海，二十六岁就漂泊异乡，先后在台湾、巴西、西班牙等地居留，1965年定居巴黎。
个人经历
流离：平静生活戛然而止
贺慕群1924年出生于浙江宁波的大户人家，并在那里度过童年和少女时代，受到良好的教育。她的祖父是当地一位有名的中医，家中藏书颇丰，贺慕群从小泡在祖父的书房中，读完了《红楼梦》、《西游记》等古典名著。母亲擅长国画，梅兰竹菊画得气韵斐然，贺慕群从小跟着母亲挥毫泼墨，久而久之对绘画萌生了兴趣。
抗战爆发，宁波遭受日军的轰炸，贺慕群平静的生活戛然而止。全家为了躲避战乱逃到上海，生活日益窘迫。为了分担家庭的困难，贺慕群白天到工厂做工赚钱，晚上则坚持去夜校上课学习美术。做工是为了养家，学画则是内心的向往。“我一直有这样的想法：女人得有自己的事业。”回想这段经历，她觉得虽然家无横财，但至少是快乐和充实的。
上世纪40年代末，贺慕群随朋友去了台北，在台北的时间很短暂，1950年即远走他乡，奔赴巴西。在圣保罗，那座于中国人而言稍显神秘的南美城市，一待就是十多年。当时张大千也在圣保罗，有时邀贺慕群去做客，但她实在不习惯繁华喧闹的社交生活，更喜欢待在画室里创作。
凭借对艺术的敏锐感悟与不断努力，贺慕群获得圣保罗资历最深、实力最强的SaoLuis画廊的赏识，与之签约合作，并举办个人画展。初次办展获得成功后，当地华人慕名邀她开班授课。在当地，贺慕群带出一批不错的学生之后，对于选择绘画作为自己的事业更有了信心。
遗憾的是，贺慕群早年的作品因其生活的变迁而散佚各地，遗留下来的，只有少数几幅人物和静物油画，但其浓郁粗犷的绘画风貌自那时起可见端倪。
寻梦：走一条纯艺术道路
1965年，在贺慕群41岁的时候，她处理好家事，只身奔赴艺术殿堂巴黎定居。事实上早在1960年，她与巴黎就结下不解之缘。那一年，贺慕群去巴黎办展，一位台湾友人带她拜访巴黎高等艺术学校，一位教授看过她的画，甚为赞赏，当即同意她进学校学习。贺慕群高兴归高兴，可惜当时持的是过境签证，只允许在法国停留48个小时，加上一想到巴西还有许多没有处理好的事情，她理智地选择了回去。
正式定居巴黎之后，贺慕群并未进入巴黎高等艺术学校念书，而是决定走自学成材的道路。她觉得自己需要建立起自己的艺术个性与风格，而学校那些系统的技法学习可能已经不那么重要了。很长一段时间，她几乎每天都去巴黎的大茅舍画院画画。大茅舍是一处倡导自由艺术的机构，分油画、版画等不同的画室，在巴黎很有名，很多成熟甚至有名的画家都会去那里画画。她常常手拿一瓶水出门，饿了就买些便宜的法式棍子面包充饥，一画就是一整天。在大茅舍，贺慕群经常碰到同样独在异乡的女画家潘玉良。潘玉良有一次看过贺慕群的画后语重心长地对她说：“小妹妹啊，你走这样一条纯艺术的道路，以后会很苦啊。”贺慕群却觉得：“做一件事就要做到底，做到最好。”
从零开始的打拼不容易，尤其是作为一个孤身奋斗的女人。对于职业画家而言，画作卖不出去，生计便无以为继。事实上，在当时的巴黎，油画因为价格昂贵并不好卖，反而是相对量大价低的版画销路好些。为了生计，贺慕群专门去学习制作铜版画，边看边学，很快便掌握了技法，能够按照自己的想法创作。第一批作品出来，老师们都惊讶于她的天赋。版画为贺慕群开辟出另一个独具特色的创作领域，既保持了其油画浓郁厚实的具象表现之风，同时又具有版画简约概括的形式特点，不错的销量让她渐渐在巴黎站稳脚跟。
两三年之后，贺慕群的油画也开始在巴黎画坛显山露水，1968年，她的油画《玩偶系列》参加法国妇女沙龙展，荣获大奖，随即应邀赴欧洲各国办展的机会也多了起来。
1970年，因为在艺术上的优异表现，法国文化部专门分配给贺慕群一间画室。那间画室也是她的住处，简单朴素，她一用就是三十余年。贺慕群的绝大部分作品都是在这间不大的画室中完成的，还有一台机器是她专门买来制作版画的。
很少有人知道，60年代末贺慕群曾经身患绝症，开过大刀，法国医生预测她最多只能活两年。她非但没有气馁，反而激起一种强烈的求生欲望，抓紧一切时间画画。在巴黎，贺慕群度过了37年，她的生活简单而清贫，但那却是她艺术生涯中最为重要的阶段。
归根：不画画就要生病了
80年代，中国与外界的文化艺术交流开始多了起来。离乡已久的贺慕群有了应邀回国参观、考察的机会，国内美术界的人士到巴黎学习、参观时也得缘拜访这位可敬可亲的“贺大姐”。
90年代中期，时任上海美术家协会主席的沈柔坚在巴黎见到贺慕群的绘画，甚为喜欢，遂邀请她回国举办个展。1996年，“贺慕群作品展”于当时还在南京西路456号的上海美术馆开幕，国内观众首次目睹了这位旅法画家的艺术风采，而同胞们的认可与赞赏也让画家本人心生暖意，勾起了回乡的念头。也正是在这次个展之后，她往返于巴黎与上海两地，找寻起新的方向。
有趣的是，那时每次出入上海的宾馆，保安人员总要贺慕群出示护照才肯放行。大概是她与人们印象中的外宾形象相去甚远：头发有些蓬乱，不施脂粉，衣着朴素，像个外乡人一样。对此，她只笑言：“我的心思都用在画上，我用自己画的画取悦观众。”
2002年，因为年事已高、行旅不便等原因，贺慕群正式结束在巴黎的生活，落叶归根，定居上海。那一年，已迁至南京西路325号新址的上海美术馆为贺慕群二度举办大型个展，展出她从巴黎带回的毕生心血之作，其中60幅颇具代表性的油画、版画、速写作品，展览结束后捐赠给了上海美术馆作为永久收藏。面对她与她的画，人们像重新发现一位美术史人物一样惊喜。
