生于四川达县。早年先后毕业于四川省立艺术专科学校和中央美术学院马克西莫夫油画训练班。历任四川美术学院教务处长，四川省诗书画院常务副院长，福建省美术家协会副主席，厦门市文联副主席，厦门大学艺术教育学院院长、教授、硕士生导师，厦门大学艺术研究所名誉所长。现任中国美术家协会福建创作中心名誉主任，中国艺术教育促进会理事，福建省美术家协会顾问。
执教高等艺术院校40多年。兼善中西绘画、书法、篆刻和诗词等。参加海内外许多重要展示，其众多力作被收藏、出版或获奖。2009年5月由中国美术家协会、中央美术学院、中国美术馆、厦门大学在中国美术馆举办了魏传义从艺60周年艺术回顾展。书画作品曾获中国书法家协会、中国美术家协会等单位联办的国际大展授予《国际特等金奖》，荣获吴作人国际美术基金会《美术教育奖》，诗词作品荣获中国当代文学研究会《特等奖》，中国文学艺术界联合会颁发从艺六十周年《荣誉证书》和《荣誉奖章》。国务院颁发特殊贡献《荣誉证书》和《特殊津贴》。
主编出版《艺术教育学》、《魏传义艺术》、《魏传义中国花鸟画选》、《魏传义中国山水画选》、《海风阁诗稿》、《中国书画入门》VCD光盘。人民美术出版社出版了大八开精装《魏传义艺术作品集》，厦门市委宣传部、厦门市文联出版了《魏传义艺术人生》专辑及光盘。有许多艺术作品曾载入《中国当代新文艺大系》、《中国当代美术家作品选集》、《中国著名国画家百人作品选》、《当代中国画名家选集》和《中国书画家大师画典》等多种中外典籍。
