1956年12月29日出生于河北省平山县两河乡南白雁村，1968年移居新疆伊宁县红星公社吉尔格朗村，1977年考入乌鲁木齐第一师范美术专业（该校1978年升格为新疆师范大学），1980年毕业留校美术系任教至今。2000年结业于南京艺术学院研究生课程班。现任新疆师范大学美术学院院长、教授、硕士生导师，中国美术家协会会员，中国画学会创会理事，中国美术家协会理论委员会委员，教育部首届高等学校艺术类专业教学指导委员会委员，第七届新疆文联委员，新疆美术家协会副主席，新疆美术教育专业委员会理事长等。
1992年被自治区团委授予“自治区新长征突击手”荣誉称号，1998年被自治区文联评为“自治区文联德艺双馨青年会员”，1999年被自治区党委宣传部授予“德艺双馨文艺百佳”荣誉称号，2004年获自治区党委与政府设立的新疆“首届天山文艺奖”，2007年被自治区政府授予自治区优秀专业技术工作者称号。
主要作品有：《甜蜜的季节》，1984年入选第六届全国美展，获优秀奖；《假日》，1985年被中国美术馆收藏；《沙枣儿》，1988年入选中华杯中国画大奖赛，获三等奖；《集》，1989年入选第七届全国美展；《云上人家》，1991年入选庆祝建党七十周年全国美展；《瀚海明珠》，1992年入选纪念毛泽东同志在延安文艺座谈会讲话发表五十周年全国美展，被上海美术馆收藏；《故垣金辉》，1994年入选第八届全国美展，获优秀奖；《红柳滩》，1999年入选第九届全国美展，获铜奖；《集》，2001年，入选艺术与科学——国际美术作品展；《东方欲晓》，2004年入选第十届全国美展；《起跑线》，2008年特邀参加2008奥林匹克美术大会；《摇啊摇》，2011年入选庆祝中国共产党成立九十周年全国美展；《高原刁羊图》、《集》、《红柳滩》，2011年入选天山南北——中国美术作品展等。
