原名胡鲁焉、安徽绩溪人。民盟成员。
历任安徽省人民政府文教委员会政策研究员，安徽省政协文史办公室副主任、文学艺术研究所副所长、艺术研究所研究员，安徽省政协第四、五届委员，第六、七、届常务委员兼文史委员会副主任。安徽省社联一、二、三届委员。中华全国美学学会第一届理事会常务理事。安徽省美学会第一、二届常务副会长。安徽省文联第三届名誉委员、美协常务理事，安徽省绿色文化、绿色美学会名誉会长。1943年开始发表作品。1980年加入全国美学学会，1981年加入中国美术家协会，1986年加入中国作家协会。著有专著《中国绘画美学史稿》、《中国古典绘画美学中的形神论》、《山水美与绘画》、《绿色文化与绿色美学通论》（合作）等。《审美试步》获安徽省1978年1985年社会科学优秀成果一等奖，《当代文学的必由之路》获1982年《芒种》文学一等奖，《艺廊思絮》获1979年—1981年《当代》文论奖。其简历或传记，在国内被收入《中国当代名人录》、《中国当代美学家》、《中国作家大辞典》、《中国美术家人名辞典》、《中国当代艺术名人录》等等，在国外被英国剑桥世界传记中心和美国传记协会收入多种名人录。1992年被国务院定为“为发展我国文化艺术事业做出了突出贡献”的专家，享受国家特殊津贴。
