周宗岱，原籍湖南湘潭县，1937年出生于长沙市黎家坡。排行十一，即以音谐十一者为号，六十后，自称宥翁。毕业于湖南第一师范。1956年，调湘潭县文化馆任美术干部。1957年，有油画、水彩等四件作品在湖南省第一届美展展出。随即入省文艺干校美术班学习。1958年3月，划为右派分子。回县后，又以反革命罪判刑劳改，颠沛二十余年。平反后，加入中国共产党，任湘潭市文化局副局长，湘潭市文联副主席。性嗜文艺，以读书写字为乐，视画画为命根子，一生荣辱、爱情、生计，咸与之相联也。1979年后，展出、发表书画作品及论文、散文甚多，出版了理论专著《美辨》。为国家八.五重点图书《中国书法文化大观》撰写《篆刻美学十题》并任该书编委。致力于写意花鸟画创新，并在湘潭、衡阳、长沙等地数次展出近作。现为中国书协会员、湖南省美协、书协、美学学会会员，湖南省书画研究院特聘书画家。
个人经历
1994年，赴日本彦根举办画展。
2000年，在湖南书画研究院举办画展。
2004年获《国画家》艺术创作奖和艺术研究奖。
2005年出版《周宗岱写意花鸟》、《周宗岱.漫写家山图卷》。
2005年6月，应邀在南京举办个展。
2007年，山水画获《齐白石奖》铜奖，论文获优秀奖。9月，将历年所写随笔集结成集，自行出版，名曰《画余信笔》。10月在中国国家画院举办个人画展。《周宗岱山水画集》出版。
2008年9月19日在湖南书画研究院举办晋京返湘汇报展。
2009年获《神州风韵——首届华人书画艺术年展》成就奖
在他的画里看不到陈规套路，也看不到时人的纤弱媚俗习气，它给人一种极强的艺术感染力，一种特有的艺术享受。有些出版的写意花鸟画，乍一看似有气势，水晕墨染，但细看不行，多看两遍，就觉乏味了，不耐看，没有值得观者玩味的地方。而宗岱先生的画不然，第一眼就被它所打动，有吸引力，再细看会越看越有味，玩味无穷，久看不厌，这就是它的不同凡响，高人之处了。
宗岱的写意花鸟和老辈的大家们一样，有传统，有规矩，有深厚的笔墨功底。但他没有被陈规旧习套住，而是在深入研习传统的基础上敢于创新，敢在颜色上做文章。
有的画家为追求文人画的"雅"而故意不用色，只用水墨，以为老百姓不喜欢色彩画。国画界也有过不少人想在颜色上创新，在生宣纸上搬用画水粉的一套方法作画，结?果画出的东西"非驴非马"。这种尝试固然可贵，但总不能被人们所首肯。周先生的写意花鸟却是另辟门径，他讲究用笔用墨，同时又讲?究用笔用色，用传统的书法线条去画颜色。他的画用墨处见笔，用色处同样见笔，说白了就是他抓住了传统中用线造型这个根本。观其画中的用色，既有传统，有法度。
