李棣生先生1936年1月出生于浙江台州路桥。小名梅生，学名棣生，笔名岚之，自号灯下客，中学阶段，先生就对美术产生了浓厚兴趣，习作《椒江暮韵》和《丰收图》曾先后发表于浙江文艺刊物《俱乐部》第三期、第二十四期封底（此刊物为《东海》前身），1958年7月，先生顺利考入浙江美术学院中国画系五年制本科。师承潘天寿、顾坤伯、陆俨少、潘韵、朱恒等大师名家，全面系统地接受了中国画传统理论和技法训练。大学三年级选修山水专业。1963年9月毕业于浙江美术学院中国画系。1963年至1965年1月在绍兴上虞参加省社会主义教育运动。1965年1月，被分配到杭州都锦生丝织厂，从事丝织工艺品美术设计工作。
李棣生先生是浙派山水画的代表性人物。在近60年的丹青生涯中，他创作了大量反映祖国大好河山的画作，得到社会各界的高度评价。他的画格调高雅，气势磅礴，其山水画源于自然，又不停留在自然的具象上，笔墨精到，浑厚华滋。1987年《李棣生山水画选》由北京燕山出版社出版。2001年2月，《李棣生画集》由西泠印社出版社出版。2018年2月，《李棣生当代山水画精品集》由浙江人民美术出版社出版。其题材大多歌颂祖国河山，人民创造，社会巨变。2017年12月，捐赠给台州市档案馆作为永久馆藏的10幅力作中，既有热情歌颂红军二万五千里长征的巨作《万水千山图》，也有讴歌延安精神的《陕北之春常在》；既有反映祖国壮美山河的《富春两岸尽朝晖》，也有描绘家乡情景的《澄江美橘喜丰收》。他为人谦逊，热心公益。把自己的心爱之作捐赠给我们，既为我们的诚心所打动，也是对我馆的莫大信任，对我馆软硬件设施的高度认可，更是对我馆档案资源建设的极大支持。此次“李棣生山水画精品展”画展中精选出李先生不同时期创作的149幅作品，从时间和内容上大体可分为四大部分：一是六十年代初期至七十年代中期杭州工作时期以富春江、新安江为主要题材的作品；二是七十年代末至八十年代以革命题材和家乡山水为主要内容的作品；三是八十年代末至九十年代以名山大川为主要内容的作品，如长江三峡、黄山烟云、峨眉望月等；四是九十年代至今的作品，搜尽奇峰打草稿，心手合一画尽胸中丘壑。这些作品反映了先生的艺术成就，正如我国美术史论大家王伯敏先生所说“作为一个山海画家，李棣生爱国、爱家园、爱生活、爱真山真水”。
