江苏省徐州府萧县人，原名品一，字翰云，斋名墨趣斋、堂号百寿堂，早年毕业于上海美术专科学校（南京艺术学院），是中国现当代杰出的书画艺术家和美术教育家。萧龙士与一代大家李可染、李苦禅、许麟庐情逾手足，书画风格上承扬州八怪、吴昌硕、齐白石，下启江淮大写意画派。擅画竹、梅、菊、松、兰草、荷花、牡丹、雁来红等题材，融南吴北齐画风于一体，技艺精湛，画风儒雅酣畅，质朴淳厚。
1924年（民国十三年），潘天寿初见萧龙士作品，极为赞誉，称为“江北第一画家”。1935年（民国二十四年），萧龙士与刘惠民、许彦达、范慈仁、刘光辉结为桃园五友。1950年，萧龙士第三次去北京，正式拜齐白石为师。大师亲刻“龙士”印章赠作纪念。1951年5月，参加了全国举办的《抗美援朝义卖画展》，萧龙士作品被选三十幅。
先后任中国美术家协会安徽分会名誉主席、安徽省书画院名誉院长，中国民盟盟员、省文史馆馆员、省人大代表和省政协常委。著有画集《萧龙士画集》《萧龙士蕙兰册》《萧龙士百寿画集》《萧龙士百寿纪念集》等。
1889年5月16日（清光绪十五年），萧龙士出生于江苏徐州府萧县萧场村，原名萧品一。
1897年（光绪二十三年），入村塾启蒙。课余，常用纸蒙在课本上描绘插图，也爱画野花、飞鸟。祖父见爱，借来画谱，供其临摹。
1902年（光绪二十八年），读书奋发，自书春联：“云过琴书润，春来翰墨香。”遂自号翰云。
1904年（光绪三十年），考入萧县县城高等小学堂读书。
1906年（光绪三十二年），考入萧县师范讲习所。
1908年2月（光绪三十四年），在萧县师范讲习所毕业。3月，回籍在刘套筹办小学。
1910年（光绪三十六年），被聘为萧县师范讲习所教师。
1913年（民国二年）春，考入江苏省立第七师范学校（徐州）讲习科。
1918年（民国七年），调任萧县教育局教育委员。
1921年（民国十年）年，在徐州苗聚伍家和李可染相识，互相观摹作品，颇为投机，此后常有往来。
早期习画
1923年（民国十二年），经李可染介绍，入刘海粟创办的上海美专学校，插班二年级。
1924年（民国十三年），潘天寿初见他作品，极为赞誉，称为“江北第一画家”。业师诸闻韵常约他登吴昌硕府上求教。
1925年（民国十四年），在美专毕业，刘海粟校长致词，蔡元培到会祝贺。业师许醉侯和吴昌硕在他的画作上题词。
任教生涯
1926年（民国十五年），在徐州参加欧亚艺术研究会，并在浙江会馆与赵松子、王继述联合举办画展。与王继述、阎泳百、王子云、李可染等共创徐州美术学校。萧品一易名为萧龙士。
1927年（民国十六年），在徐州快哉亭举办个人画展。展画百件，历时三日。
1929年（民国十八年），萧龙士以得意佳作一百又六件，在云龙山放鹤亭义展义卖，三日售完，得款全部捐献，赈济徐州灾民。
1930年（民国十九年），在上海晤杭州国立艺专校长林风眠，林校长誉萧龙士之画为“艺界之光”。
1932年（民国二十一年），萧龙士《兰草》一幅，被送参加伦敦国际艺术展览会展出，并刊入画册。先后在徐州艺术专科学校，铜山中学教美术。
1935（民国二十四年）年，萧龙士与刘惠民、许彦达、范慈仁、刘光辉结为桃园五友。
1937年（民国二十六年）4月，参加《第二次全国美术展览》，赴南京参加美展开幕式，拜见了于右任、叶恭绰、黄宾虹、沈尹默等名家。
1939年（民国二十八年），苏豫皖边成立国立二十一中，萧龙士应聘为美术教师。
1943年（民国三十二年），先后任萧县流动中学和永城县中学美术教师。
1946年（民国三十五年），在徐州与郑培心、李可染，佟苏丹、王祥甫、王寄舟等组织中原艺社。参加艺社活动的还有胡叙之、张之仁、卓启俊等人。在南京举办画展，著名画家陈之佛、张书旗、傅抱石联名评介。
1947年（民国三十六年），萧龙士在镇江慈幼院举办画展，以义卖资助慈幼院。家乡连年水旱灾害，萧龙士将黄河故道大堤以南土地二百余亩，全部献出济贫。
拜师交友
1949年春，萧龙士携画友刘惠民，甥郑正去北京，经李可染引见，拜谒齐白石大师。
1950年，萧龙士第三次去北京，正式拜齐白石为师。大师亲刻“龙士”印章赠作纪念。
1951年5月，参加了全国举办的《抗美援朝义卖画展》，萧龙士作品被选三十幅。
1952年12月，当选为安徽省第一届人民代表会议代表。
1955年，萧龙士被聘为安徽省文史馆馆员。

1965年，作品《兰八哥》选送第四届全国美术展览展出。被推选为《安徽省书法篆刻研究会》理事会副会长。
晚年时期
1978年5月，学生60余人，在合肥逍遥津公园为萧龙士祝贺九十大寿，并展出萧龙士得意之作四十余件。刘海粟、关山月、秦愕生、王肇民、王子云、李可染、李苦禅、许麟庐发来祝贺作品。徐州报发表记者董尧的文章《九十高龄当奋发》。
1979年，萧龙士分别被选为安徽省四届人大代表和政协常委。10月，参加中国美术家协会会员代表大会。
1981年春，萧龙士在合肥举办画展，经孙长林介绍，结识山东省美协主席于希宁、山水画家黑伯龙。萧龙士与外甥郑正联合在济南举办画展。10月5日，刘海粟八上黄山之后来到合肥，萧龙士执礼恭谨，令陪行人员肃然起敬。
1983年5月16日，为庆祝萧龙士95大寿，从艺80周年，中国民主同盟、安徽省委员会、美协安徽分会，安徽省书画院、安徽省文史馆、合肥市工人文化宫等五单位在合肥市举行萧龙士从艺80年茶话会。8月30日，《徐州日报》以题为《年高艺精，香远益清》载文，简介萧龙士艺术生涯。
1984年7月20日，北京成立齐白石艺术开发交流中心。萧龙士被推选为艺术指导委员会副主席。被聘为中国老年书画研究会顾问。
1985年，和三位离休老同志黎光祖、蒋德功、张学祥一道组建松风竹雨社。
1986年4月，安徽省政协成立庆祝“萧龙士百岁寿辰筹备组织”。
1987年元月，萧县教育局向萧龙士颁发“教育奖学金基金会理事长”证书。
1990年10月17日，于合肥逝世，享年100岁。
萧龙士擅画竹、梅、菊、松、兰草、荷花、牡丹、雁来红等题材，以兰、荷过人，兼攻山水人物。画风融南吴北齐画风于一体，技艺精湛，画风儒雅酣畅，质朴淳厚，沉雄老辣；尝题“握笔应书民心愿，凝神当思国前程”的书作以表达其情怀。

萧龙士是集花鸟、人物、山水画于一身的多能画家，是诗歌、书法与绘画理论诸方面都有深厚功力的艺术家。是中国现当代杰出的书画艺术家，被后人尊称为“安徽八老”。其大写意绘画艺术是对吴昌硕、齐白石大写意的继承与发展，为大写意绘画史增添了承前启后浓墨重彩的一笔，并在此基础上开启和创办了在中国画坛上具有一点的影响力和代表性的“江淮大写意画派”。并挟新安画派在中国画史上有巨大影响。《安徽画报》、《江苏画刊》、香港《文汇报》等报纸画刊均辟专栏介绍其艺术事迹。
萧龙士受新文化运动的影响，期间多致力于美术教育事业，当过小学校长、美术教师。是当代杰出的美术教育家，培育了数以千计的弟子、门生，他教学生学画，首先教他们做人的道理和做人的标准。他本人身体力行，一生不为名利，谈博利禄。在其长达一个多世纪的生命历程中，倾注了毕生心力为人、为师、为艺，为后人留下累累艺术硕果，赢得桃李满天下。他的学生遍及全国各地有的已是卓然成名，如郑震、刘惠民、郭公达、丁培生、王少石、郑正、薛志耘、欧阳龙等。他们从萧龙士手中接过传统而富有创造性的画笔，自己攀登艺术的高峰，继承和发展“江淮大写意画”的绘画艺术。
