郭西元，生于山东诸城，又名锡元、曦元。山东省诸城人，1969年毕业于南京艺术学院美术系。现任深圳大学教授、硕士生导师、文人画研究所所长、深圳市美术家协会顾问、中国美术家协会会员、中国书法家协会会员、日本天河美术家协会名誉会长。
郭氏擅中国画，从师于刘海粟、陈大羽诸先生，风格豪放洒脱，独具一格。作品有浓厚的文人气，被誉为“原形态”的文人画家。
作品获第十八次中日交流美术作品展大奖“札幌市长奖”、中国美术金彩奖、全国中国画展优秀奖、全国当代花鸟画艺术大展优秀奖、全国中国画提名展优秀奖等国内外大奖多次。
作品参加中国首届写意画展、全国50名家展、中国美协会员展等重大联展。于北京、南京、济南、青岛、潍坊、深圳、香港、台湾、马来西亚、日本举办个人画展二十余次，获好评。
1993年《春雨》等六件作品被美籍物理学家李正道等收藏；
1994年《夏荷图》等五件作品被日本创价协会会长池田大作先生及日本创价协会收藏；
1996年《案头写生》等四件作品被日本首相海部俊村收藏；
1998年作品《春归》被北京画院美术馆收藏；
1998年《荷香图》等十件作品被马来西亚创价协会收藏；
2006年3月，在中国美术馆举办个人画展，《龚贤造像》等作品三件被中国美术馆收藏；人民美术出版社出版大型个人专集《中国当代名家--郭西元》。
2008年中国教育电视一台以及全国各省市教育电视台播出十一集大型教学片—<大写意花鸟画技法>，并发行画册及光碟。
2008年参加“和平颂—神七太空飞行之旅”活动赴非洲采风，作品搭乘神州七号遨游太空；2008、2009连续两年被评为《当代最具学术价值和市场潜力的画家》。
作品被海内外博物馆、美术馆及个人收藏。
入编中国美术家人名大辞典等多种名人录。
出版个人作品集二十余种，论文集两部。
