作品参展于《全国六·八届美展》、《全国一、二届花鸟画展》、《中国画三百家》、港、台地区举办的《亚洲水墨画大展》、《华夏艺术国际展》获金奖。1990年应邀赴日举办个展;1994年在中国美术馆举办个展,先后在洛阳、兰州、丹东、广州等地举办个展以及2000年应邀赴法国、意大利、西班牙等国进行艺术考察。曾主持举办第十一届当代中国花鸟画邀请展;在中国美术馆举办过个人画展。其事迹刊登于《中国现代美术全集》、英国剑桥《国际名人传记》等。出版有多集《赵梅生画集》、《赵梅生水墨世界》。《美术》、《中国艺术》、《美术观察》等专业刊物都有专题评介。 作品被中国美术馆、故宫博物院等收藏。2005年国家科学技术奖励大会授予“优秀人民艺术家”称号。
梅花一树映朝霞

九十年代初读到赵梅生的一本画集,作者那情韵悠扬的画风和锐意创新的精神,给笔者留下颇深印象。此后,又陆续看到梅生的一些新作,而每次看到那些新作,都的确有一种‘新’的感觉。听说他将出版一本新的画集,笔者便写下这篇短文,作为对他新成就的祝贺。 赵梅生和笔者的人生际遇、艺术道路多有相似处,因此也较谈得来。例如在一九五七年以前,我们都曾画漫画,后来再转向画中国画。又因我们都没有受过正规的‘科班’训练,画中国画,主要靠自己摸索,因此他的画对笔者来说就颇有可资借鉴之处。
画作气息清新
梅生的画,重内涵,富新意,造型生动,笔墨娴熟,技法全面,深得中国画之三味,有自己独特的面貌和个性。它不离传统而不囿于传统;时有新变却又不是为新而新。他创新的内核和动力是来自生活的新鲜感受。梅生虽已年逾古稀,却仍然保持着对于生活的敏锐感受力,主客体交流的渠道畅通,令他的画总有着一种清新气息和生命的活力。如他的《夕阳如金》,取材于校园里经过花工修剪的行道树,那时多s平凡的景物在夕阳下刹那间所闪现的美,激发了作者的艺术灵感,于是就凝聚成这一富于诗意的永恒的画面。
梅生不但敏于感受,而且善于运用不同的绘画语言来表现不同的审美感受。如他的《紫浪泛春》,虽以紫藤花为题材,却没有去表现它的那一串串、一朵朵的自然形貌,而是把它组织成一个整块,一片紫霞,画出了作者的一种感受,那是盎然的春意,涌动的春潮。另一作品《鸟潮》,画的是迎着朝霞展翅竞飞的鸟群,这里的一群鸟,没有一只是具体的,所有鸟都成了抽象的笔墨符号,但给人一派蓬勃朝气的感觉,生机勃勃。作者通过提炼概括、组织笔墨,画出了一股气、一股意,这正是本来意义上的‘写意’。作者只把自己感觉得最真、最深的东西告诉观画者,而绝不使人陷于对物象表面的追求。
他对禽鸟的形象和生态十分熟悉,而且摸索出一套自己的造型方法和笔墨程式,用笔虽粗放简括,对形象的把握却恰到好处。他从不斤斤于对象的细节描绘,而只着重于对神韵的捕捉。他笔下的禽鸟都是动态的,少有静止的,因为只有在运动中才能充分显示物件的活力和神采韵致。
带漫画意味
由于作者以往在漫画方面的修养,使他的某些国画作品从构思、造型到表现手法也多少带有漫画的意味,如《灯花》就是这样。蜡烛把光明和温暖洒向人间,却留下了一串灯花,这灯花却又化作了朵朵梅花。这正是数十年献身于教育事业的梅生的自我写照,也是他作为教师对人生的独特感情和体验的结晶。根据笔者在中国画创作中的体会,在保持中国画审美特性的前提下,国画和其他画种的疆界是不妨模糊一些的。从其他画种汲取养料,包括借用某些绘画语言,对中国画自身的发展未必没有好处。前人云:‘画令人惊不如令人喜;令人喜不如令人思。’梅生的画就能引人遐想,味在笔墨之外。这滋味不论是苦是甜是酸是辣,都是从人生体验中来,都是人生的映照。艺术到了某种境界,自然就把人生和艺术融为一体了。
梅生的画中隐隐有一种孤傲之气,这种孤傲之气,是内在的,并不锋芒外露,更没有那种剑拔弩张的霸悍之态;他的画又朴实率真、平易近人,但却没有甜俗迎合之意。这不但是对艺术的真诚,也是对观画者的真诚。艺术本来是人类互通的一种语言,不但要美,而且要真诚。惟其真诚,才能赢得观赏者的共鸣。
梅生的画正是发自内心,出于真诚,是用他自己的语言说出自己的感受,所以是值得人们以同样的真诚去领略去品赏的。

2012年12月3日,由中共山西省委宣传部、中国美术馆、中国国家画院、中国美术家协会、中国画学会、山西省文学艺术界联合会主办的“雪海流香——赵梅生画展”在中国美术馆开幕。这是现年88岁高龄的艺术家赵梅生第三次在中国美术馆举办画展,共展出赵梅生创作作品78幅。
展览由著名美术理论家、中国美术家协会理论委员会名誉主任邵大箴出任学术主持,著名艺术策展人、文化部中外文化交流中心国韵文华书画院常务副院长兼秘书长余根晖担任策展人。

赵梅生是当代著名的花鸟画家,他以其豪迈开张,老辣沉着的画风为当代画坛所瞩目。他的艺术创作包括花鸟系列、欧洲采风系列、晋商宅院系列等等均为不容忽视的题材。尤其是其苦心经营,浓烈奔放的梅花图,为他赢得了无数的喝彩。赵梅生自幼喜爱绘画,而细追求起他的绘画之路,却发现他并不是一开始便步入国画艺术这条大道的。在他前半生的几十年时间里,他是一位兢兢业业,坚守教席且多受嘉奖的人民教师。这是神圣的职业,这也是赵梅生艺术生涯中最可宝贵的财富经历。在真正进入国画艺术的园地之前,赵梅生还是一位颇有成就的漫画家。在探索中国画的征程中,赵梅生还自学了西画的技法以及东西方的艺术思想与美学。古人有云:海纳百川,不择细流,正是这来自各方面的滋养,才最终养育出赵梅生纵横捭阖,迥异时流的大写意花鸟画。
中国自古即有爱梅的传统,历代歌咏书画佳作不胜枚举。据传梅花在我国初植于殷商,兴于汉唐,成于宋,至明清而盛。古人之所以如此热爱梅花,原因是梅花自初生至结实具有四德:初生蕊为元,开花为亨,结子为利,成熟为贞。后人还有梅花五瓣,乃是五福吉象之说。“五福”者,“快乐、幸运、长寿、顺利、太平”。
赵梅生爱画梅花,也精于画梅花。细细品味赵梅生笔下的梅花,人们不难发现,他所传神写照的早已不是人们生活中所习见的梅花模样。可以说,赵梅生的梅花图,已经融入了他自身的情感与寄托,是他人生追求与艺术追求的浓缩与升华的结晶。
赵梅生描绘出的梅花形象,不是陆放翁笔下“驿外断桥边,寂寞开无主”的落寞、冷清与孤寂,而是主席笔下“无意苦争春,只把春来报。待到山花烂漫时,她在丛中笑。”的英雄豪迈。难怪著名美术史论家王伯敏这样评价赵梅生的梅花:梅生先生前身当是梅,故其落笔得梅之神。昔放翁善吟,一树一梅花,韵味天成,今梅生赵氏画梅,千姿万端以气势取胜。气者,骨也,墨气是也。眉公继儒先生题曰:“骨气是其人,墨气是其艺”,一言以蔽之——画如其人,人品即画品也。

In the early nineties, I read a collection of Zhao Meisheng's paintings. The author was deeply impressed by his melodious style and innovative spirit. The author wrote this essay as a congratulations on his new achievements. There are many similarities between Zhao Meisheng and the author in their life experiences and artistic paths, so they can be talked about. For example, before 1957, we all drew caricatures and then turned to Chinese painting. And because we have not received the formal "scientific class" training, painting Chinese painting, mainly by their own exploration, so his painting for the author has some reference.
Fresh air of painting
Meisheng's paintings, which emphasize connotation, are full of new ideas, vivid in shape, skillful in writing and ink, and comprehensive in techniques, are well-known in the three flavors of Chinese painting, and have their own unique features and personalities. It is not confined to the tradition but not separated from it; it changes from time to time but not for the new. The core and power of his innovation comes from the fresh experience of life. Although Meisheng has passed the age of antiquity, he still maintains a keen sense of life, and the channels of communication between the subject and the object are unblocked, which makes his paintings always have a fresh breath and vitality of life. For example, the setting sun is like gold, which is based on the street trees trimmed by the gardeners in the campus. At that time, the beauty of the ordinary scenery in the setting sun, which inspired the author's artistic inspiration, condensed into this poetic and eternal picture.
Mei Sheng is not only sensitive to feelings, but also good at using different painting languages to express different aesthetic feelings. For example, although his "Purple waves in spring" takes Wisteria flowers as the theme, it does not show the natural appearance of its strings and blossoms, but organizes it into a whole piece, a piece of purple haze, painting the author's feeling, which is full of spring and surging spring tide. Another work, bird tide, depicts a flock of birds flying in the morning. None of the birds here are concrete. All the birds have become Abstract ink symbols, but they give people a sense of vitality. Through refining, summarizing and organizing the brush and ink, the author draws a stream of Qi and a stream of meaning, which is the original meaning of "freehand brushwork". The author only tells the viewer what he feels most true and deepest, and never makes people fall into the pursuit of the surface of objects.
He is very familiar with the image and ecology of birds, and he has found out a set of his own modeling methods and ink programs. Although the pen is extensive and simple, it is just right to grasp the image. He never focuses on the detailed description of the object, but only on the capture of verve. His birds are dynamic, few static, because only in the movement can fully show the vitality and charm of the object.
