1988年经文化部批准应邀赴日本举办个展获得成功；1989年应邀赴英国伦敦举办个展，英女皇弟迈克亲王出席画展开幕，部分作品为皇室收藏；1992年为庆祝中日建交20周年，应日本方面邀请，以中国驻日本大使馆为后援单位的《汤立中国画展》与《董寿平画展》《宋文治画展》同时在日本举办，广获好评，影响甚大；1998年应邀赴台湾国父纪念馆举办个展。
自幼受家庭艺术熏陶，六岁开始习画。十岁时，父亲汤文选先生作《次子汤立作画》国画一幅，记录了汤立从小在父亲指示下练习书法、绘画时的情景。
毕业于湖北省艺术学校和湖北美术学院，国家一级美术师、中国美术家协会会员。
汤立出生于艺术世家，其父汤文选是当代中国画大家。汤立得天独厚，他的大写意花鸟深受父亲影响，品味纯正，格调高雅；他远师青藤、八大、缶翁、白石、大千，博采众长，化合融铸，自成一格。他甘于寂寞，长期潜心于书法、文论以及东西方多个艺术门类的学习与研究，日积月累，终能以勃发的精猛之气，直扣艺术鹄的，破门而入，势不可挡。他的作品，或豪情奔放，雄奇瑰丽，别具堂皇气象；或潇洒旷逸，妙得天籁，尽显才情风流。
在花鸟画中，汤立以牡丹、墨竹、红梅、兰花、鹰、鹭、鹤、鸡等见长。
