出生于山东聊城市，1962年毕业于济南艺术学校美术科。
上世纪60年代初开始参加山东省美协及济南市文联组织的深入生活，并参加省市美展.70年代初沿黄河旅行写生举办画展，并出版“黄河”画册，“海河”画册。70年代末，应文化部中国画创作组邀请赴北京为外交驻外40多个国家大使馆作画多幅，并且为钓鱼台国宾馆、人民大会堂、中南海以及首都机场创作大幅山水画多幅。

曾应邀赴美国、加拿大、日本、新加坡、韩国、法国、意大利、德国、比利时、瑞士、荷兰、奥地利等国访问写生、举办画展或艺术交流活动。

其作品被中国美术馆、中国美协、江苏省美术馆、深圳博物馆、北京画院、清华大学等单位收藏。山东、北京、上海人美曾先后出版《张登堂国画专辑》五册，张登堂艺术传略入编《中国美术家辞典》、《中国当代画家大辞典》、《中国现代书画家》、《中国艺术家大辞典》等辞书中。

张登堂现为中国美术家协会会员、山东省美协理事、济南市美协副主席、山东画院山水画研究会会长、山东大学美术考古研究所兼职教授、深圳大学艺术学院客座教授、山东省政协委员、山东省政协联谊书画院副院长、河山画理事、济南画院名誉院长、一级美术师。
