师承一代宗师张大千得意传人胡爽庵，为大风堂再传弟子。
曾拜著名画家王静庐、何海霞等先生。

现为国家一级美术师，文化部艺术品评估委员.中国书画名人联合会会长，中国书法艺术研究院副院长，中国书画函授大学教授，日本福冈水墨艺术学院客座教授，美国国际大学客座教授荣誉博士，中国文联中国文化艺术网，三峡画院等文艺团体艺术顾问。

姚先生自幼秉承家学，酷爱书画。
擅长山水，走兽画，尤擅画虎。
他继承传统，博采众长，紧紧把握国画重意尚神的特点，运用夸张、变形等写意技法形成独具神韵的画虎新风。
作品阳刚大气，傲骨雄威。在写意的基础上集纳百兽灵气，并融入秦汉瓦当、历代石雕、彩塑及京戏脸谱等民间艺术，以夸张变形的写意技法突出虎的精气神威，表达匡扶正气、振奋民族精神的强烈意念。
作品在天安门城楼大厅、人民大会堂、毛主席纪念堂、中南海、国防大学等地都均有收藏.
并多次在香港、台湾、日本、韩国、新加坡、加拿大、美国等地展出.作品并被作为国礼赠送给美国布什、韩国金泳三、朝鲜金正日主席、日本土井多贺子议长等许多国际友人。
姚少华为中美、中日、中韩、中朝、中法等国家文化艺术交流作出卓越的贡献，堪称“老虎外交大使”。
2004年应邀为江泽民、胡锦涛等国家领导人创作“祥和图”、“居高声远图”。
姚少华成名以后，崇尚奉献精神，为抗洪、赈灾、部队、开发大西北、扶持贫困等公益中无私捐赠了许多优秀作品和拍卖款项，受到国际的赞誉！
多次应邀出访欧洲、亚洲各国办展并进行艺术交流，荣获联合国“世界和平教育奖”、“世界和平阿卡得米国际学术艺术权威奖”、“世界名人最高荣誉奖”、“国际文化大奖”等
