1949年生。现任中国艺术研究院艺术创作指导委员会副主任，中国艺术研究院中国画院艺术委员会主任，创作部主任，博士生导师，中国美术家协会中国画艺委会委员，中国国家画院研究员，中国画学会理事，北京市文史馆馆员，中华文化发展促进会理事，文化部高级职称评委。国家一级美术师，享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家。
其作品连续五届在全国美展获奖：
1984年，作品《铺路石》入选第六届全国美展获铜奖；
1989年，作品《厚土》入选第七届全国美展获铜奖；
1994年，作品《金秋》入选第八届全国美展获最高奖；
1999年，作品《魂系雪域——孔繁森》入选第九届全国美展获铜奖；
2004年，作品《西部放歌——灵光》入选第十届全国美展获银奖；
1987年，作品《沂蒙娃》入选“中国人民解放军建军六十周年美展”获一等奖；
2001年，作品《金秋》入选“百年中国画大展”；
2004年，作品《水墨人生——黄宾虹》荣获中国艺术研究院颁发的“黄宾虹学术奖”；作品《西部放歌——灵光》获文化部主办的“第二届全国画院双年展”最高奖学术奖；
2007年，作品《先贤录——齐白石》获文化部主办的“第四届全国画院双年展”最高奖画院奖；

2009年，承担中国国家重大历史题材美术创作工程“第一次国共合作”的创作任务，作品《国共合作1924·广州》被国家收藏；2010年，作品《先贤录——齐白石》《先贤录——康有为》应邀参加中国国家画院主办的“2010大写意国画邀请展”。2012年，作品《开采光明——农民工纪实》参加由中国艺术研究院、中国国家博物馆主办的大型现实主义绘画艺术展“同在蓝天下——为农民工塑像中国画主题创作展”，并在国家博物馆展出。
2014年，作品《弘一大师》参加中法建交50周年“中国意象”巡展，分别在法国大皇宫和中国美术馆展出。同年，作品《弘一大师》参加第十届中国艺术节评委作品展。2016年，创作国家重大历史题材“中华文明历史题材美术创作工程”——《民族会盟——七溪会阅图》的创作，由国家博物馆收藏。
2016年，承担北京市重大历史题材“开国大典”的创作。
