董欣宾,生于无锡张泾。82年至江苏省国画院从事山水画创作,并任理论工作室主任。1994年被聘为国家一级美术师。主攻山水,兼工人物、花鸟。擅理论研究,兼及书法、篆刻、诗歌、散文、武术、医学、哲学等。1985年起,完成《中国绘画对偶范畴论》、《中国绘画六法生态论》、《太阳的魔语--人类文化生态学导论》等具有开拓性、体系性的理论著作。先后在中国美术馆、中央美术学院、江苏省美术馆、南京艺术学院举办个展,多次参加国家级、世界级大型艺术展览。台北《雄师美术》曾于1989年出版《董欣宾专辑》,《江苏画刊》、《美术》、《荣宝斋》等期刊多次将其作重点推出。译林出版社于98年出版大型画册《董欣宾画集》。文化部对外展览中心2001年8月于中国美术馆一楼正中圆厅举办《江南好--董欣宾中国画展》,同时出版《董欣宾人物画集稿》、《画呓与印痕》等。
董欣宾上知天文,下知地理,思如泉泻、口若悬河、滔滔不绝、纵横捭阖。集中西古今之成,有严格的中国画本体学研究深度,理法兼备,笔墨恣肆,狂放中表现出至高的精神境界与艺术技巧,继傅抱石之后开创了江苏画派崭新风貌,成为具有流派性影响的一代大家。刘海粟于1985年论其画“能致力于化古为新,所作运线遒挺,有北碑风采;浓墨透光,淡墨生泽,情韵脱俗。”何海霞于1984年说他“大江南北无出于右,二十年后横行天下。”他是新文人画南方画派的领衔人物。他的画是综合了院体画、文人画、民间画以及中西许多学科之精神的审美一元性即本体性绘画。他主张冷抽象、热表现。八十年代他以独步天下的潇洒放达的中锋长线大写意手法建立起强烈的个人风格而名震中国画坛。九十年代上半叶他致力于用墨之创新,用线更为厚重坚实,辅之以泼墨、积墨,画风厚重浑朴。九十年代末至新世纪初,他致力于色彩之创新,以色为墨,以写代泼,于张大千、刘海粟之后又创一格,画风更臻灿烂辉煌。
