刘文谌，湖北汉阳人，1965年湖北艺术学院美术系并留院，历任湖北省美术院中国画创作研究室主任、副院长、国家一级美术师、中国美术家协会会员，湖北省书法家协会理事，湖北省艺术专业高级职务评审委员，并享受政府专家津贴。
擅长中国画写意重彩，作品厚重古朴，具楚文化特色。作品《红土系列》获第七届全国美展铜奖并入编《中国现代美术全集》。作品《秋情》获全国第二届中国山水画展二等奖。作品入选中国美协赴日本《现代中国绘画展》、赴美国《中国传统绘画新趋势展》、法国巴黎秋季沙龙展、《韩中美术协会交流展》。台湾《国际彩墨艺术大展》以及在台湾和香港举办的《刘文谌红土系列作品展》。湖北美术馆举办《巴楚本色—刘文谌作品展》，武汉美术馆举办《巴楚印象—刘文谌彩墨艺术展》。出版有《刘文谌作品集》、《刘文谌画集》等。
