李宗儒，出生于天津，祖籍江苏武进人，李宗儒先生擅长油画，尤精于水彩、水粉画，早在年师从魏天霖、李瑞年、吴冠中、罗尔纯等诸位艺术大师。他的绘画风格色彩明快，造型严谨，技法成熟，刻画生动，融东西方绘画精神，展现中国民族风情之韵味，其作品受到各界好评。
1963—1974年在北京中央宣传部直属教改实验基地—北京景山学校任教研室主任。曾编写九年一贯制美术实验大纲和教材。
1974—1984年在天津工艺美术学校任教，1982年升任教条主任，系统修订了教学大纳和教材。1984—1987年任天津工艺美院副院长，主管教学工作。1985年参与创建了全国第一所艺术类成人高校—天津职艺美术学院，并组织全体教职工艰苦创业，取得了突出的成绩。培养了几千名有实力的工艺设计人才，在国内有较高的知名度。
1997年8月因工作需要调往天津教育学院帮助创建艺术系。一年多的时间，已初具规模，设置了美术教育、音乐教育、工艺美术和少年教育学院与天津师范大学合并，成立艺术学院，担任首任院长。
主编的著作有《水粉画》一书和《中国设计年鉴》第1卷和第2卷；绘画作品在国内外多次获奖或被收藏，享有较高的知名度。
