王憨山，一九二四年农历十一月初三生，湖南湘乡人（现双峰县龙田乡保丰村）。2000年二月十二日逝世于双峰县城。早年师从高希舜、潘天寿，主攻写意花鸟。提出“二分写字，二分画画，六分读书。”主张作画要给足。“墨要给足，色要给足，给足才有分量。”其诗如白石，字似金农，画则崇尚周颐论词的“重、拙、大”的审美法度，磅礴大气，不阿流俗、独辟蹊径。深厚的学养还表现在画作题识上，寥寥数语即融入对社会、对人生的深切感受，韵味无穷。乡野习见的花鸟虫鱼，在其文质相兼的笔下，都被点化为极富意蕴的雅构。其作品先后在长沙、北京、广州、深圳、台湾展出，引起很大反响。生前乃湖南文史研究馆馆员、湖南书画研究院特聘画师，被视为中国花鸟在新时期的大师之一，如一座大山巍然屹立。电视专题片《花鸟画家王憨山》曾在全国各地及国外播放。出版有《王憨山画集》、《论王憨山的写意花鸟》、《憨山世界》及大型画册《王憨山》。二OO一年十月，其作品《群雀图》入选《中国百年画展》。另有作品《大吉图》《麻雀图》入选新世纪出版的中学美术教材。
王憨山朴实、憨厚、真率。早年读过南京美专，50年代初当过兵，复员后在县文化馆作美术干部。1980年退休后，成为一个隐于乡里的画家。
