廖少华，江西修水人。1972年开始从事美术设计工作。1977年毕业于江西赣南师范学院美术专业。1990年至1993年6月，任青海民族师专艺术系讲师，《师专学报》常务副主编；1993年7月至1997年2月任常熟高专工艺美术系副主任，分管系部教学与科研；1997年3月至2000年7月任湖北民族学院艺术系主任和本科教学评估专家组成员。2000年8月至今在湖南第一师范学院先后担任艺术系和美术系主任。工作至今从事中国画、美术理论、艺术设计和艺术形态学等教学、创作与研究40余年。现为中国美术家协会会员，中国博物馆协会会员，中国高等教育学会美育专业委员会常务理事；湖南第一师范学院美术系教授、系主任;湖南省美术家协会理论委员会主任，湖南省美术家协会理事；湖南省新闻出版局特聘艺术图书审读专家。2012年7月担任国务院侨办加拿大蒙特利尔文化交流教师团团长，带队完成赴加中华文化艺术教学任务。
自1982年开始，相继在《美术》、《美术观察》、《装饰》、《国画家》、《朵云》、《江苏画刊》等全国100余家刊物发表学术文章160余篇、中国画和雕塑作品200余件。《国画家》和《江苏画刊》杂志、《中国教育报》、《美术报》、香港《中外美术研究》、泰国《亚洲日报》等杂志报刊曾在专栏中多次介绍。1998年《清江晨雾》、《武陵秋景》两件山水画入选日中第二届水墨画研究交流展。多件作品被日本、新加坡、加拿大、泰国、香港等国家及地区机构和友人收藏。出版著作《精神的形迹》和《廖少华山水画集》；主编大学教材《设计概论》。著名理论家、中国艺术研究院博导翟墨先生，生前于2008年12月撰文评价廖教授为“学者型画家”(见[国画家]杂志2009年第5期画家介绍)。
