叶放，1962年生于苏州毕园，现居苏州南石皮记。苏州国画院国家高级美术师。状元之后，文人世家。一位生命历程和创作发想无不透出深厚人文气息的艺术家。
作为出生于园林，工作于园林，生活于园林，又写园林，画园林，造园林，与园林渊源特殊的人，他总是将自己对中国园林的文化理念贯穿于他的创作中，造就了他在艺术上无论是水墨、雕塑，还是装置、景观，都极具内蕴的个性和哲思的特质。
其艺术作品不仅在中国、英国、法国、意大利、美国、加拿大、日本、韩国、新加坡、马来西亚，以及香港和台湾等国家或地区展出，多次举办个人艺术展览，并被海内外多家美术馆和博物馆收藏。其作品在国内外多次获奖，其艺术也在国内外数百种报刊杂志上发表、刊登和介绍。
出版有《叶放水墨画》，《后花园—叶放水墨画艺术》，《当代中国山水画新篇章—叶放卷》，《冶园—叶放造境》等。
2007年获台湾国际艺术博览会"年度艺术家"称号，并举办由水墨、雕塑、装置、影像等艺术形式构成的"文局艺阵——年度艺术家叶放"特别展。
2003年在苏州完成的园林作品"南石皮记"，以个人的哲学思辩来诠释传统的造园艺术，其如作水墨山水般的创造手法，使林泉为笔墨，将中国古老而渐衰的叠山理水技艺发挥得淋漓尽致。从立体山水画卷的景观风格到承载人文寓意的文字符号，以及随处可见的装置，均呈现出他对当代园林形态的创立。被专家学者誉为"开当代造园艺术先河"的代表，并在联合国教科文组织所拍摄的世界文化遗产纪录片之"苏州古典园林"中，被列为九座古典园林之后的第十座，以作为传承与创新的代表。同时被著名媒体评为"园林艺术大师"。
2009年在意大利威尼斯创作的园林作品"达园"，作为第一件参加威尼斯双年展的中国园林艺术作品，也是第一件在欧洲创作建造的中国园林艺术作品。其物化中国哲学思想的创作理念，使达园的每一个细节都充满了象征的寓意，而其以当代媒介演绎古典情境的手法，更使达园每一处景物都包含了时代的精神。从毕园到南石皮记，再到达园，叶放始终把园林作为了文化理想的承载。自1995年起召集各类雅集，被著名媒体称为"现代雅集之父"，同时其一系列雅活理念的提倡被称为"中国雅生活的先导者"。
