宋省予(1909年-1966年)原名连庆，字廉卿，号红杏主人。福建省上杭县城关人。清宣统元年十一月生于豆腐作坊雇工家庭。父赉臣，为闽西著名画家之一。
宋省予7岁随父习画，11岁入县立中学读书。民国13年(1924年)毕业后，在县城树人小学任教。1925—1937年间，先后在广东梅县美专、蕉岭创兆、潮安镇海等6所学校任美术教员，并自创“省予画社”、“美术人才养成所”，为粤东地区培养了一大批美术人才。1937年抗日战争开始后携眷返杭，每年春夏潜心作画，秋季则负笈外出，或举办个人画展和“抗日劳军书画义展”，捐资抗日救亡运动。期间有很长时间在汕头居住，喜欢在画上署“韩江宋省予画于岛”或“宋省予写于汕上”，自创“省予画社”、“美术人才养成所”，为粤东地区培养了一大批美术人才。
1957年，赴梅县创办美术学习班。1958年与县名画家罗晓帆共创上杭专科艺术专科学校，并亲自在该校任教。1959年，福建师范学院聘其为图画教师。在执教之余，积极参与社会活动，曾为中国美术家协会会员、首届福建省政协委员、中国美术家协会福建分会会员。热心从事发展群众性美术事业，悉心探索绘画理论，举办“宋省予花鸟技法讲座”，后编印成书。代表作有《紫藤八哥》、《枫鹰》、《山歌声里夕阳红》、《稻熟鸭肥》、《白孔雀》、《百寿图》、《岩谷春光》、《四季花鸟》、《水仙花》和《百花齐放》等，先后参加全国、华东、省、地美术展览。还多次参加日本、香港等地的画展，在东南亚一带享有很高声誉。出版《宋省予花鸟技法讲座》、《宋省予画集》。
宋省予早年专攻任派(任伯年)写意花鸟，后在广东结识张大千、高剑父、关山月等著名画家，从中吸取岭南派之精华。他不存门户之见，取精用宏，博采众长，在深入继承民族绘画艺术传统的基础上，学古而不拘泥于古，结合自己的创作实践，以及诗文、书法、金石等诸方面的素养，形成劲健、潇洒的画风。除精于花鸟外，在山水、人物、走兽等画作上成就亦高，草书、篆刻更有独到的功夫。作品思想深刻，饱寓诗情，意境优美，格调清新，色墨瑰丽。在其笔下，花鸟、走兽均栩栩如生，风骨遒劲，诗意盎然，特别是花鸟画用笔更是灵便。代表作有《百寿图》、《岩谷春光》、《四季花鸟》、《水仙花》和《百花齐放》等，均先后参加全国、华东、省、地美术展览。在全国报刊、杂志上，以及在出版社发表、出版的作品不下百幅，同时还多次参加日本和香港等地的画展，在东南亚一带享有很高声誉。1965年，上海人民美术出版社曾征画50幅，拟出版《宋省予画集》。正当其满怀信心为社会主义绘画艺术的发展贡献力量之时，遇上“文化大革命”，受冲击，1966年7月20日弃世，终年57岁。
1978年10月9日，福建省文化局、福建省文联、福建省美术家协会和福建师范大学联合举行“宋省予同志追悼会”，并举办“宋省予遗作展览”。
