莫高翔，男，汉族。1949年出生于湖南邵阳县一山村农家，自幼酷爱读书涂鸦。1976年毕业于湖南师大学，并留校任教至今。现为湖南师范大学美术学院教授、硕士生导师，中国画教研室主任，中国美术家协会会员，湖南省花鸟画家协会副主席，湖南省工笔画研究会秘书长。作品《金秋》入选第六届全国美展；《乐园》入选第八届美展；《秋实》入选首届花鸟画展；《山花》、《瑞雪》入选全国第十次新人新作展。
莫高翔教授主要擅长中国画，作品多次入选国内外各种展览，并获奖或被收藏；发表论文数篇；出版有《白描花鸟画集》、《莫高翔工笔花鸟画》等书，《白描花鸟画集》获第十批全国优秀畅销书奖。代表作品有：《金秋》一九八四年作，入选全国六届美展，由中国美术馆收藏，获湖南省美术作品三等奖；《葡萄》一九九0年作，入选第五届当代中国花鸟画邀请展；《晶莹》一九九一年作，入选第六届当代中国花鸟画邀请展；《清溪》一九九二年作，入选第七届当代中国花鸟画邀请展；同年作《美人蕉》入编《‘92中国美术年鉴》，又作《秋实》入选全国首届花鸟画展，获湖南省美展铜奖；《月夜》入选中国、日本国绘画交流展；《乐园》一九九四年作，入选全国八届美展，获湖南省美展铜奖；《山花》、《瑞雪》、《墨竹》、《月夜》等作品于一九九五年入选全国第十届新人新作品展。其中《山花》发表于《美术》杂志一九九六年第一期，《瑞雪》发表于《美术》杂志一九九八的第二期。2003年《文明的碎片》参加全国首届小幅工笔画展览获金奖。
莫高翔先生的工笔花鸟画不刻意求工，粉饰豪华而追求自然、清新、质朴、淡雅。他的画作先以细而淡的墨线勾勒，其线劲健有力；再以淡而雅的色彩晕染，使物象清爽别致，营造在一定的情境之中。尽管他笔下的草木、花鸟、虫鱼都很写实，但就其作品内蕴而言，画家主观之情感、意境、心态与自然之象有机和谐地同构于一体，完全贯穿和表达了中国艺术精神中“天人合一”、“复归自然”、“形神兼备”的艺术哲学观。
莫高翔先生的作品情境一扫古代前贤院士的闲适、冷逸之气，代之以生气盎然，张扬着振奋向上的情态。语言图式上，善于把大千世界繁杂无序的景物单纯化，秩序化。画面常以冷色为主调，驾驭着较为单纯的基本符号和繁复的景物组合，在批判继承传统虚白法的基础上，溶进了现代平面构成的手法，使传统的工笔花鸟画呈现出现代形态。
2012年12月31日，“象为心印——湖南师范大学美术学院工笔花鸟画研究工作室师生作品联展”[1]在深圳博物馆老馆开幕，著名工笔画家莫高翔带领他的44位学生展出54幅工笔画精品。
