广东开平人。擅长水彩画、油画。1953年毕业于华南文艺学院美术部，1956年毕业于中南美专绘画系，留校任教。历任广州美术学院教育系主任、教授、硕士生导师，全国中小学美术教材审查委员、广东省文史馆馆员、广东水彩画研究会副会长。1989年获省优良教学成果三等奖。油画《海练》、年画《满怀豪情上北京》、水彩画《第一代可可》、《渔水情》、《乐在其中》、《红梅》、《珊瑚鱼》等参加全国美展或作品展，中国美术馆等处收藏。出版《胡钜湛水彩画选集》、《热带鱼》等。
