字梅魂，1926年生于六朝古都南京。早年考入南京中央大学艺术系，师承傅抱石、陈之佛、黄君璧、张书旂诸名师学习，毕业后又考入北京中央美术学院，成为徐悲鸿大师亲自授业、辅导的研究生。大学认真攻读美术专业七年整。参加工作以来，历任中南文艺学院美术系讲师。广州美术学院中国画系副教授、教授、教研组长、硕士研究生导师等职。1961年入中国美术家协会。从事中国画创作及美术教育工作60余年。曾在国内外大型展览中十多次获奖。出版著作有：《中国画工笔人物画法》、《牡丹画法》、《人物画谱》、《儿童学画画》、百家画库·《中国美术家吉梅文专集》、《吉梅文中国画作品集》、中国当代书画名家经典作品《国画家吉梅文作品选》等。先后还有近百幅作品和论文被选入国内外大型画集、文集。其姓名、传略、作品，已被载入《中国当代国画家辞典》、《世界华人美术名家年鉴》、《世界当代书画篆刻大辞典》等国内外出版的80多种美术名人、名家词典。60年来，教学上曾受到广州美术学院多次表彰，并颁发了证书，1993年曾荣获世界书画艺术名人称号和证书。2008年南方电视台卫星频道，专程采访了老画家吉梅文教授，并在《书画名家》栏目向全球介绍了他的生平及70余幅作品，备受国内外收藏家关注，好评如潮。
