钟道泉（1902—1969），字本立，汉族，四川达县人。以其功底深厚，深得自然之道的中国写意花鸟画著称于世。
二十世纪20年代考入武昌美专，毕业后入刘海粟创办的上海美专学艺，1926年又随潘天寿、张聿光转入上海新华艺大，其突出的才华深受潘、张二人器重，举荐至吴昌硕门下。其早期作品已深谙昌硕笔意之精髓。
毕业后回武昌美专任教，1927年秋，与武昌艺专的创始人蒋兰圃等，成立了以“阐扬国故，振起艺术”为宗旨的湖北第一家民间学术团体“梅社”，号称“梅社十友”。
1930年又与唐一禾发起成立武美艺术研究会，举办多次画展及公演，湖北艺术日趋活跃。作品又相继参加了中华民国第一、二届《全国美术展览会》。
其间不仅与齐白石等画界大师，还与陈独秀、顾颉刚、郁达夫、光未然、吴晓邦、李九皋等各界大家过往交厚。至1935年在武汉举办湖北省有始以来规模最大的一次展览《汉口市美术展览》、湖北美术界呈现出空前的繁荣时，年仅33岁的钟道泉在国画界已名闻遐迩，其作品被誉“大气磅礴”。
抗战初期，湖北画家们宣传抗日，挥毫助赈，钟道泉不仅作品被抢购，还亲自接待参观者参观者和义卖者。
抗战后期回四川成都，在省南虹艺专等校一直从事美术教学与创作工作，同时在四川各地举办或参加各类画展，1944年参加教育部第三次全国美展，1947年以个人名义举办“收集欧洲名画片展”，图片中已包含欧洲印象派作品。
其间与张大千、徐悲鸿、冯玉祥、李一目、蔡绍序等各界大家交往频繁。在画风上注重兼容并收、道法自然，同时不断探究拓宽中国画的笔、墨、色、纸的表现力。其深厚的艺术造诣和在各地产生的影响，使其在美术界已享有“西南地区国画宗师”之誉。解放后任四川省文联国画组组长。
1956年赴重庆，在四川美术学院绘画系任教，1958年入中国美术家协会。其间政治运动频发，先生与世无争，潜心艺术创作与教学，低调入世，高调作画。尚有作品《红芳晓露浓》参加“社会主义国家造型艺术展”，并有西南地区“柯瑝、王渔父、吴一峰、钟道泉、杨济川五人画展”。1961年上海人民美术出版为其出版《花鸟画小辑》。50年代末，前苏联油画家马克西莫夫观看钟道泉先生现场作画，曾被其胸有成竹、能在短短几分钟时间内笔飞墨舞，转眼间完成一幅出神入化、无懈可击的作品的绝招彻底倾倒。
先生以深厚的传统功底，在经历多年的兼容并收之后，后期作品不仅已融八大山人、徐渭、吴昌硕、齐白石等大家之精髓，更凸显出深得自然之道而大气磅礴、清纯超逸的新貌，还成功地将太极之气贯穿于创作过程中，使不少精品呈现出出神入化的境界。其墨气淋漓酣畅、色泽厚重丰润、笔力遒劲饱满、画气豪放苍劲之画作，令人刮目，不仅值得认真研究学习，对中国传统花鸟画继承与发展，更有着不可忽视之贡献。
正值炉火纯青之时，不幸于1969年4月，在“文革”中被迫害致死，享年67岁。
1977年平反并举办遗作展，由四川美术出版社出版《钟道泉国画选》。1999年遗作应邀参加“20世纪天府百年绘画展。?
